GM or C++

Posted by mesenberg on June 15, 2006, 11:54 a.m.

Many people who are serious programmers believe that people who use GM are n00bs, for GM is not a very efficient program. People all say that gm games are all too n00bi to be worth anything. My oppinion is that GM is a very good starting ground for game dev and programming. Learning GM is alot easier than learning c++ or other low level languages. But GM does have a tendency to make ppl lazy in programming. I would think that GM is more for hobbyists and serious ppl trying to make a carrier should go beyond, what are your views?

BTW admins, I like the new display on the homepage with both examples and games.

BTW: where is that rpg that supposed to be around here? I cant find it!

I agree, although gm is good for a year or two to see if you even like the programming world.

Go under options and turn on rpg stuff. If you need help I'll help you out.

I believe most people using GM are hobbyists cause serious people dont even consider using it. But you can make high quality games with gm

I use GM because I suck at/can't afford anything else.

I use Game Maker because I don't intend to learn C++. Why would I when Game Maker works fine for me? Simple as that.

C++ is not a low level language. It is very advanced, and has almost unlimited ability. (Well, compared to GM) The only thing is, it is very complicated. GM is very simple. It is a gateway language, basically. It is a very good language, GML, but it is not going to get you anywhere in the game industry.

Yea what etpayn said. Have fun learning C++ though, its not exactly easy learning it yourself.

I've only been using GM for just over 1 year, but I want to learn C++. It is quite a lot harder than GM though =(. I think I'll stick to GM for a bit longer.

There basically is no C++ to GM argument. They are almost completely different.

btw: low level language means that its more complicated, more work is left for you and less for the compiler. Yes they are completely different but they are still compared often.

I think there is an argument, but no definite answer. It depends on your aspirations and willingness to spend your nights learning, then implementing the language. A 2d platformer will generally run very well on GM while an FPS will be painful.
