Game maker noobs

Posted by omgaghost on April 9, 2008, 4:35 p.m.

I am DEFINATELY a gamemaker noob. I like can't do it. It's pretty easy in D & D, but I really want to make a game using gml. And that's where the problem kicks in, I don't know how to use gml that well.

Also, by looking at the comments on some of my games, I realize that my games lack "polish". I don't even know what that means, so could somebody please explain it to me?

If somebody could tell me how to make my games have more polish, it would be greatly appreciated. If I learned how to do something like that, then maybe my games would get better even though I mostly use D&D.

So I'm a game maker noob who wants to get better. Help will be greatly appreciated and possibly rewarded with a special thanks thing.

Thank you so much,

@Retro, I'd say that's innovation, rather than polish, but you could put it under the same banner.

Anyway, looking good!=hyperrealistic.

For both GML and Polish are concerned, start small.

For GML start by graduallly replaceing D&D with GML (i.e. create a speed variable and add that to x in the step event for movement instead of using the "set horizontal speed" item).

As for Polish, use KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid), make sure your graphics match, controls make sense, minimal/no bugs, gamplay, etc.

yeah always start with the basics of the game

Polish usually means how developed the game is in non-essential areas. Very nice introduction, menus, etc tend to be regarded as 'polish'. Polish also refers to games being bug-free and presented well.

You racist bastard, my native language can be used to talked about a lot of other things!
