Improving EotS

I was thinking about EotS earlier, and came up with some ideas to improve it, as follows:

* Minimap icons. These would be specific icons that would show up on the minimap, similar to the Goal Flag icons in the third campaign mission. There would be separate icons for the following:

Base buildings (parts of your base)

Planets (able to colonize these)

Stars (the point around which asteroid belts circle)

Asteroids (resources)

Battleships (superunits - like AoM's titans)

IS Cannons (stationary strategic base parts)

Teleport Ships (mobile strategic units)

Colony Ships (strategic units)

Mission goals (for exploration and mission completion)

Mission-specific Units (units you have to kill)

Units you must keep alive in a mission

Turrets (on asteroids or not)

* Minimap modes. To keep the map from getting too clustered, you would be able to turn off Environment icons, Construction icons, and Mission icons individually

* Balancing issues.

I think the Missile weapon system is underpowered. It should damage all ships in a squad at once, rather than doing damage to one.

Cruisers should come with lasers installed when you research lasers, and Destroyers should come with missiles installed when you research missiles.

Weapons should be faster to install (1/10 current time) to make them more useful.

I hope to release an open beta of EotS at the end of the month, with included multiplayer functionality and a trigger system for scenario design. I also need to implement some changes to the skirmish function, allowing up to four enemy players, medium and hard AIs (with "cheating"), and allowing you to set enemy factions.

I know who's winning first at the 4e5 comp.

I'll be looking forward to the updated demo… as well as the multiplayer functionality! [:)]

Proof of concept: The new minimap. The circular icons are planets. The square icon with the cross is a Colony Ship. Base extentions are represented by small squares. The sun is the yellow cross in the center.
