Rant-n-Rave #17

This is sure one thing that really bothers me to no end (I seem to say that with every RnR, so I suppose I should just stop beginning them like this). I absolutely hate the fact that GMers are just using their bad talents or lack thereof to make games they call "artistic" when its actually crap.

This mishap dates back to the "modern" era in art itself. This "art" consists of pointless, sub-par vomit thrown in a canvas and called "art" for no apparent reason. One red line in a white canvas. A single black dot in the middle of a canvas. The canvas mercilessly splattered all over with color. This is absolute rubbish, and people who say it's art have much to learn. I can already hear the calls of the "art" fans: "You ignorant pathetic fool. You know nothing of art. This is a form of art in and of itself, and just because you can't understand it doesn't mean it's crap. It just means you can't understand it". To that, I'm afraid that your thoughts are mere manure. To have a piece of art, to have something worthy of praise, you must put effort into making it appealing to the eye. Having the reverse being called the best is nothing but some lame excuse for poeple to give us sub-par "art". By this logic, cars should be made with sub-par standards, with lack of brakes and erratic explosions. But hey, you can't say the company sucks because you know nothing. You see, this "car" is a genre in and of itself. There's the Sedan, the SUV, the Pickup, now there's the Vomit car. Only the chic-est people drive these, and you're an ignorant bastard if you say that these cars are crap.

That's how idiotic these people sound. Admit it, crap is crap. Don't try to find beauty in crap because there is none. You can find beauty even in horse hurlings if you scritinize it so, but that doesn't mean that it the beauty is there, it's just that the spectators are making all this up off their head.

Back to the proverbial world of GM, there's a few users who "intend" to make crappy games and call it a genre of their own (YOU KNOW who you are, I don't need to call out names). All I'm saying is, you're not making it artistic. You're not making it "chic". You're not making it good. You're just slandering your own name and making crap that nobody wants or likes. If you're a REAL indie developer, you don't resort to "modern artistic" excuses, just like REAL artists don't resort to "modern art" either. Don't try to rationalize your underwhelming behavior by saying it's done "on purpose" as I often hear. You can make a game surreal and of good quality. You can make a "parody" game of good quality. You're just using the world "surreal" and "parody" as inacceptable excuses to make a sub-par game, and believe me, no one that matters buys into your stuff.

No one that matters. There's still fools who like this type of "games" (I give them way too much credit by saying they're games), but believe me, they don't matter in this proverbial world of indie game development. The true people that matter are the ones that actually have earned their spot, and some random Joe who suddently labels sub-par games as "surreal and artistic" really has no say in what good games actually consist of.

Use your talents (if you have any). You can make a GOOD surreal or artistic game if you actually put work on it. Don't rationalize for your crappy games as being surreal or "done on purpose". Let me come out and burst your bubble with a universal truth: No one likes those games, no one cares for them, and most people would rather not have to deal with them at all. You're not fooling anyone here but real fools, so do yourself a favor, stop making excuses and make games of quality for once.

//But as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or not.//

Then some people need to have their eyes ripped out.

Because then I will be-holding their eyes.

"Use your talents (if you have any)."

I think that everyone (who is not disabled somehow) has enough talent to make decent games, if s/he'd just put some effort into them.

So true! Is this in reference to the game in which all you can do is walk off the screen and die?

^ This is in reference to that and all games of its kind.

I agree 100%

What games specifically are you referring to? Yes, some of them are crappy, but other experimental 'games' are quite good in my opinion. For instance, I hope you aren't including La La Land, because I love those. In any case, I agree that random color-slapping isn't art, but I can't say for sure that I agree with you until you give a few specific examples of games that you feel this way about.
