GP2X and XMB_UI

Compliments! Cryptic title, huh? Hopefully those words will come to your understanding after this short blog.

<img src="http://64digits.com/users/stampede/blog_gp2x.jpg" align="right">I'm pre-ordering new GP2X F-200 very soon. GP2X is a handheld gaming console, built on top of Linux and community ideology. Consoles system is open and everyone can write programs and games for it. I think it's just a brilliant idea!

It has already wide variety of emulators (Amiga, C64, Nes, Snes etc.) and some great homebrew games. It can also play music and you can watch videos from it. Neat!

Console runs on two 240Mhz cores, which can be overclocked through software. It has 64Mb of internal memory (which mainly is used by system installation) and you can use your SD cards (SDHC up to 32Gb). This new model F-200 sports also a touchscreen.

Uh… This looks like a commercial. But I'm so excited about this machine!

And then to that other thingy in my title.

I started a little project in Game Maker just for fun. It's a program called XMB_UI. Name comes from Sonys award-winning user interface Xross Media Bar, which is used ie. in PSP and Playstation 3. I'm writing this app mainly for myself.

The XMB_UI is easy-to-use launcher program, with customizable looks. Main idea comes from Sonys XMB, as you can see from the name ;) Well, maybe this is good spot to post a screenshot!

You can easily add new items to the list by editing list files. And you can actually link different lists to another. There are three different ways to control the program: keyboard, mouse clicks or mouse wheel. If you just start to type with keyboard it will automatically search it, same way as Apples Spotlight. Search as you type.

I only have few things I still want to add to it, before I release beta. But well, I'm not sure if it's wise to post it here on 64d. I think there will be lots of comments about how useless this is :D

See you next time!

I remember the GP32 and thought it looked really neat. I'm still yet to see one in action tho.

Oh sweet, new GP2X. I have a GP2X, the black one, already though. And by I, I mean it's my brothers.

Hmm, I only have used XMB a little bit, it seemed very handy. It actually won some UI awards or something. And in my opinion, it looks really good :D
