So I heard some fools were rebooting the classic epic classicness that is the X-com series, which if you haven't played you must now.
Thought it'd be funny to play with my soldiers named after 64Ders. The names are just taken off whoever happened to on the Active User list at the time and the Activity Feed blogs, so I'm not playing favourites.
Here's the starting fellas:
Within seconds we got our first UFO to investigate, but it was so small it got blown to smithereens.
Then some more noobs arrived:
Notice the soldiers listed first are at the front of the ship, so they get to see the action first.
Then our first real challenge. I idiotically decided to investigate at night, which usually results in alot of death. KaBob storms the ship and Juju pwns a couple of stragglers.
Thus:
Ah, how amusing. I'll keep you posted.
Well, after I had a little rage about points-buying systems it got me thinking how exactly it could be put into use.
What I'd like to do is put up a indie game distribution website (don't rage quit yet), perhaps broadening to music also. "So what", I know, but I've been thinking of ways to set it apart.
When I see all these new start-up new sites getting shitloads of hits I see one main feature - invite reward systems i.e. a user of the site gets the site new members for "points".
So on top of a regular store where games can be bought (at standard prices, with regular money), they can also be bought with points.
The main major drawback is that all of the developers will have to agree to a "shareware mentality" - I don't have the money to invest in giving them the equivalent money should a user buy with points (And, as ventures such as Spotify have showed, nor do many), however, they are being opened to a large audience, most likely much larger than a standard distribution website, so they will still get as many sales. As a further compromise, devs can be awarded free ads on the site, sponsored competitions, etc, depending on how many points they have tallied from users, and the best part is that the devs will get a much higher margin of the sales than regular sites, because I'm getting free advertising (therefore more money from advertising).
It all sounds ludicrous, but consider that these devs will be indie and willing to give things away gratis to earn a small revenue - I call it "shareware" because its not a great deal different from giving a chapter of Doom away in the hope folks will pay for the rest.
Also consider that as a consumer this is a far better alternative to piracy - you're still getting the stuff you want for free but without the guilty conscience (because as payment you've directed lots more people towards it, some who'll buy it). It also solves the problems people have mentioned of not being able to find the torrents to smaller releases anyway.
I was also reminded of the recent ctrl+alt+del story arc. I'm not sure how many of you follow, but it was kind of about an in-store RPG/achievement system, and I would be interested in incorporating that also. Achievements might consist of actually buying games, gaining in-game achievements, or even winning one of the perhaps regular game/music/pixelart-creation competitions. Points could be the main rewards, where some sort of rank/level system would unlock further achievements. This would also help build a community based at the website, as people would want to show off their ranks and achievements. I could also even blatantly rip off 64d's design in the process.
Ok then, thats me done. Feel free to tell me whether or not you like it. I guess I'll find out if I find someone steals all my ideas. Or maybe you'll just tear apart all the massive gaping flaws this whole concept has. Cheers!
Yo, I put a PC in your Mac so you can Mac while you PC.
Plus bonus - it's me demonstrating Game Maker's ease of use in a typical day-to-day situation.
Next in line is Ubuntu, so I can Linux while I PC while I Mac.
That is all. Yeh I figure there's alot of shit blogs recently so I better join the craze. (I also acknowledge I account for 90% of said shit blogs)

p.s. Thought I'd take the opportunity to say don't buy All Points Bulletin its a piece of unplayable shit, and can I also say always buy off Steam because they actually refunded my (digital) pre-order. Those guys are awesome.
All Points Bulletin
Too much? I found out I had like £200 more to spend than I thought soo... yeah... No more buying for me this year (unless its portal 2).
If anyone else is gonna try out APB, let me know and we can ride, bruddahs (nb I'm being a cop). I hate mmorpgs, but I'm willing to give an actual action mmo a chance. It looks pretty fucking awesome.
Please remind me to stop buying games.
So some guy went on a shotgun rampage a few miles away, killing 12, injuring 25 before killing himself. This coming days after a schoolbus crash which killed 2 kids from the high school nearest mine.
Nothing ever happens here. Holy shit.
Personally, it puts any curiosity about the influence of violent video games on school massacres out the window, when a 52 year old simply decides he's had enough. It's unfathomable to me why anyone would commit suicide, let alone why they would take as many down with them as possible, but clearly anyone that mentally ill is going to do something horrible no matter what's driving them.
I don't know. It does beg the question why these kinds of things have only happened in the past 50 or so years. Or maybe they always have, it's just now that people have too much time and too much firepower on their hands.
Well I was going to talk about something else but this has just sort of put a downer on my day.
