Update on MMORPG

Since the first blog post we've made good progress, and are on schedule:

- Production pipeline starting to produce original pixel art

- RakNet replication working so that up to 600 players can join the server and walk around, and will be seen by other players. Screenshot showing 3 of us. Huge milestone! Making the game fun already giving friends a tour of the map.

- Light map and collision map produced using separate layers in Tiled, working really well!

Thanks for moral support on IRC, shout out to RC and squeakyreaper. If you're not on, come online, some of us practically live on there, im always available to chat.

How have you tested the 600 person capacity? Just running lots of instances? If you haven't I'd suggest it.

Haven't tested up to 600, it's a theoretical estimate using the architecture I'm implementing, but I have run a lot of instances. Not too fussed about the limit right now, can test that out properly later. The replication framework potentially allows for multiple server or cloud replication later on. Also, because I don't care if people cheat, a lot of the load is taken off the server because clients are authoritative on most things.

What I'm more concerned about is latency compensation. I'm using a very crude averaging technique and the moment, but it may prove to be terrible if I have more lag than a LAN. Again, with testing we will see. Planning to host it on an AWS windows instance before the competition deadline, so keep in touch for testing opportunities!

Hi Debels, they are semi-permanent. At least very similar to what the game will look like. Of course there will be many more sprites… and a UI…

The character shown there is the troll, who is a paladin-like buff character. He also has a funny troll dance he can do. We've done more but you'll see all in good time!
