I have 4 Gb right now and I hit swap space very often, and when that happens performance goes straight to hell. I could have bought 4 more Gbs and be done with it, but I have the money right now and I'd rather max it out now and not worry about RAM ever again.

I hit it once or twice, that's why I got 8gb. But I think by the time you'll ever need 16gb, your motherboard will be outdated and DDR4 will be out.

Why is everyone apparently using external hdd's? Unless you're on eSATA, you'll probably be limited to about 40 mb/s

USB 3.0?

Well, the largest internal laptop drive is 1 TB as far as I'm aware. Certainly decent, but file-hoarding download addicts like myself will want more.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing that causes you to hit it?

Differential equations is one of the easiest maths I've studied.
I guess it may have been that I took it my freshman year alongside a proof heavy linear algebra course.

No. It's your money and your computer. For my needs and most other people's, 4 GB is plenty of RAM and anything above 6 is essentially useless. Other components are much more deserving of upgrade considerations, including getting a SSD or a HDD/SSD hybrid instead of a plain ol' HDD. That's one of the most noticeable bottlenecks in computer performance today, and upgrading to SSD would also help out with memory requirements since the pagefile will be able to be read and written to much faster.

Yeah…. I think the 8 gigs I got is REALLY more than enough… and that's why I got it. I don't really see the point in any higher… unless you're a hardcore mmo-er who wants every texture for every game available the second the game is loaded. LOL

Well then what you want is faster memory, not more memory. lol
