Game Maker on Linux

Posted by AndrewB on March 26, 2011, 6:36 a.m.

I know you probably saw the title for this and though… "OH NO! Not another one!!"

Well, yes, it is another one. I'm just in a happy mood at the moment because, after trying to install GM8 on my Ubuntu laptop, I gave up and decided to try and install GM6.1, and it works! Perfectly!

Granted, there are some issues with the image editor, room editor and object editor, but f you know your way around Game Maker, then it's a breeze!

I was so happy when it opened and asked me, "Would you like to enable Advanced mode?", yes, yes I do!

I proceeded to test the one thing that was on my mind… "Can Linux handle D3D functions?". So, I transfered a pre-made model from my Windows laptop, loaded it, and voila! Perfect! I know this might not be interesting to you, but I'm over the moon about this!

Secondly I thought, hmmm, surfaces? I was never sure about surfaces on Linux, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway, needless to say, it worked.

If anyone here knows of issues that will arise with using GM on Linux, post it here and I'll see if I can induce the problem! :P

Peace for now furry land lubbers!

The real trick will be to get GM 8.1 working without a crack because it won't have Softwrap. That's the only thing keeping it from working- Wine can't handle the embedded web page they use for the nag screen/registration system. I've almost gotten it working but it still can't actually get through to the editor or the registration screen without just skipping over the whole thing.

However, if you have a relatively modern and powerful computer and a copy of Windows you can use, a much, much better solution IMO would be virtualization. Wine is so painful to use even when the applications do run because all the graphics are fugly and everything is slightly glitchy.

I managed to get a cracked version of GM8 to work quite well.

Did you crack it yourself?

I still can't wrap my head around it..

@Rusky Oh is that the problem. You'd think Wine could handle an embedded webpage…

@Cpsgames Mind letting me in on your secret?

I probably can't just give out the links, but I'll tell you what I remember doing. I installed GM8 with Wine. Then I googled up a working crack, copied it over to the GM8 exe and it all worked fine from there.

The embedded page is probably sloppily written for Trident, but WINE uses Gecko. Regardless, 6.1 is still the version to hang on to.

That's how it works- just make sure you don't get something malicious. Anyway, even though all the functionality works quite well, Wine is still rather unpleasant to use- I always end up rebooting into Windows when I want to use GM.

My favor of 6.1 remains.

…6.1? Really? What's wrong with extensions, real alpha support, a much better code editor, better resource handling, faster script handling, built-in Vista/7 support, cross platform, mobile and HTML5 support, continued support by YoYo and the community who distributes gmks now, and soon (within days) to be a zooming room editor with better controls, better font support, no softwrap, better (including ambient lighting, more precise depth buffer and faster rendering) 3d, etc?

It is made by Yoyogames and not Mark Overmars anymore, is my guess.
