Minecraft? What's Minecraft?

So, two days ago I was wandering through the wilderness of the Drakalor chain, muttering some incantations to myself, when I stumbled upon a pack of wild jackals. As I was being torn apart, I remembered that Blazing Potion I had in my pocket, as well as the Light potion. Like any curious Alchemist, I mixed the two.

Two seconds later I realized I, and every one of the jackals, had been blown to pieces in a major conflagration.

Now, if you aren't lost yet, I'm talking about ADOM, my latest gaming addiction. Minecraft pales in comparison IMO.

Of course, this is what I'd say about Dwarf Fortress too.

How about another tale?

Once again, I was wandering around minding my own business (This time as a Drakish Fighter, in a dungeon). I had just encountered an Ogre and dispatched him with ease. Pleased with my accomplishment I walked up to a nearby door. It was locked. So feeling overconfident I kicked it down, only to realize to my dismay a few seconds later that some mischievous magician had rigged the door. My armor, weapons and body were shredded apart by a magical explosion. Local newspapers sport the headline "Mighty adventurer defeated by a door!".

So, anyway, I've been coding a Roguelike library in SFML, been working on HYDRA (Which is still practically finished, but I'm still taking my time), tinkered with GM and almost completed another fangame.

So, anything going on that's NOT Minecraft? (Besides the comp mentioned in the newsfeed. I'm entering it).

Wow, I just looked it up on youtube and it looks incredibly lame to me.

We are talking about the same game right?

Yes. We are.

And your misconception is a common one.

You see, like books, Roguelikes make you rely on your imagination to fill in the visuals. Also, that guy in the video has a Morrowind icon on his desktop, so you know he's insanely sane. >:{

Wow. You're so late, Mega :P I played that game ages ago, back when it was actually being developed :P

I have ambivalent feelings towards ADOM. On the one hand, it's probably the most solid and consistent roguelike, world- and story-wise (as opposed to NetHack's haphazard Dungeons of Random Everything). It also has one of the nicest ASCII graphics around (mostly due to brilliant colour use).

On the other hand, it's so hilariously unfair. At one point or another, you'll either a. forget all your spells b. get your melee accuracy lowered to 5% because of some bizarre combat mechanic I never quite understood which means that your accuracy drops permanently if you get surrounded or something.

I never really progressed very far story-wise, I just went for the Infinite Dungeon to check how far I manage to go down without dying. Actually, I did get to the Dwarven Town a few times, but the game gets ridiculously hard from that point onwards.

Wait til I go back to working on my Python roguelike, we'll have a roguelike-off!

Welcome to the worlds of roguelikes, Gears-of-War-boy.

First thing you gotta learn about roguelikes, they're one of those games that you simply can't look up on YT. Seriously, I'm really into roguelikes*, and even I can't watch vids of roguelike games I know because it's just… lame.

* Okay, I don't play Dwarf Fortress, so I'm not a total junkie, but still.

I'd rather blow shit up and chainsaw shit, than looking at a black and white screen trying to figure out what I'm looking at. :p

And that's why you'll never find True Happiness.

P.S. It's really way easier if you just download the game and try playing it. After a while, you stop worrying about recognising things and you start crapping your pants everytime you see a D next to a @.
