[MEGA] Some F4D reviews

Posted by Astryl on Jan. 12, 2012, 6:14 a.m.

Well, I played all the games I downloaded so far, except for sirXemic's (The Microsoft XNA Redistributables 4.0 installer was being a dick, so I couldn't play it at all).

Now, I'm going to not give a rating out of 10, since quite honestly, that system doesn't hold up.

Instead, I'm going to write about what I enjoyed in the game, what annoyed me, and then at the end of this blog post my favorites.

DeepFreeze

This was the first game I played. The first thing that struck me is the icon, which reminded me of Dwarf Fortress for some reason.

Next, the game itself; I used to spend hours on that sort of puzzlegame (Bounce the ball around the field etc), and I found myself spending the next 15 minutes completely absorbed.

The music was great too.

One of the biggest problems with the game was the difficulty. I wasn't puzzling enough. Next time, I suggest dropping the 'shiny hint blocks' and letting the player place blocks on any tile. Also, put in 'useless' blocks. Do that and you've got yourself an excellent foundation for a puzzler.

The art is excellent too, as an afterthought :P

Kizuna - the girl who saved Christmas

First off, I was impressed by the graphics. I downloaded the version with shaders, but sadly it wouldn't work (Didn't give any reason in the log either, just crashed). The non-shader version worked fine though.

The gameplay reminded me of Megaman Legends, though not as… flowing. Early on I noticed the bullet-hell references, and later on I was frantically dodging the enemy projectiles. I even died once. Not bad at all :P

I loved the music, but the theme for the first few levels got really repetitive after a while (I shouldn't complain though).

One of the first things that began to annoy me was the… Sneezing sound effect in the last few levels. OK, it wasn't sneezing, but it sounded like somebody sneezing and recording it in 8-bit DPCM.

Then the final boss. A disappointment. The last level before the boss was more challenging. Also, tedious is a word I can use to describe the boss.

Otherwise, viva Japanese school-girls fighting off robotic armies of nutcrackers with an awesome looking gun that has Contra-like powerups!

Acid's game

I couldn't get it to download correctly; Got an invalid archive all the time.

Can't remember the name, because I deleted the invalid archive. :P

Jared the Friendly Pumpkin: Christmas Edition

This one stumped me for a while, since I hadn't actually tried Jared the Friendly pumpkin out before. I got it after a while though.

I got a score of 628 on average.

Ogres and Elves

This game took a while to get into, because of the glaring lack of instructions.

Then I got completely and utterly pissed off by the user interface.

I won't say I wasn't highly amused by the 'upgrades' available. I made it to level 4 before giving up.

Snowball Commander

I started this, and I instantly thought "Missile Command!". And was rewarded with nostalgia, albeit in a more Christmassy form. The random phrases tossed around when you lose a snowman had me in stitches too, for some reason.

I managed to survive two waves, then my ammo/base started getting hit repeatedly.

Eternal Winter: The Spirit Breaker

Now, instead of writing "O_O. BLOOD. KNIFE" like the friend who saw this suggested (Which had something to do with Cupcakes… don't ask), I'll write about the game.

I didn't get it. Althought I'm assuming that the little black balls were the Evil Ones, that mysteriously break up into slices of Dark Watermelon when touched by the… Cursor…

And blood. Lot's of blood (Call it what you want, it looks like blood).

I finished the game though, and I will say: Great for testing your mouse precision.

Now for my favorites… so far

1.Kizuna: The girl who saved Christmas

2.Deep Freeze

3.Snowball Commander

4.The others in no particular order

Don't take my opinions too… harshly. Also, I still have to decide whether I'm going to bother download JID's game. I don't know if I want to wait half an hour for a 49mb game to download…

I'll probably at least try DaggerHogs game today. And the others I forgot about.

Anyway, it seems like we had a much better turnout than the last two comps. That is, lower quantity but greater overall quality.

Nice.

For Deep freeze, we figured you can only place objects on specific areas but we might open it up to placing them anywhere. If you mean "useless" as in extra blocks you don't need, some levels do in fact have them. For most levels, the less items you use the better. Glad you loved the art tho! :P

There you go! This one should work! :D

Also, I liked your game a lot. Posting my reviews when I get home… which should be in about 1 or 2 hours.
