System Status

Alright, let me take this one step at a time.

Firstly, I hate Microsoft. OK. Done.

Secondly, I hate my forgetful/rambling mind. Done.

Now, yesterday, on an impulse, I decided to 'finally' update to Windows 7, so I could unlock the full power of my PC. XP, even with the SP2 drivers, can only use 2 of my 4 cores, can't use my SATA drive's AHCI mode, can't use my video card's full functionality and basically can't do much of anything with my hardware.

So, we have this Windows 7 'Recovery Disc' lying around that came with my dad's PC, provided by a "Microsoft Partner", and already slipstreamed with basic drivers and software.

Also, it's got the worst gypped installer I've ever seen in my life. With no prompts, no warning, and without even asking me whether I might actually speak Portugese, Windows 7 completely bulldozed my entire hard-drive (Using the aforementioned AHCI mode, so it was damned fast too).

Of course, prior to attempting this installation, I backed up my key files to a USB drive. Notably my 'Tracking' folder, along with all my music, samples and some VSTi collections.

I also managed to grab the C:\Dev folder, containing my self-built SFML folder, and my personal code libraries.

I even managed to remember to back up some of my Steam save games…

So I am left to wonder how the hell I forgot the damned folders right under my nose. On my desktop, I had two important folders. "Completition" and "Projects". They were even centered, so I had to see them every time I saw my desktop.

Suffice to say, I forgot them, and Microsoft devoured them.

Anyway, I'm empirically assuming I lost everything. I will attempt to run a file recovery once I am able, and I do have some of my projects backed up on disc somewhere (Exile, notably).

Otherwise: Hunter and it's rats are dead. That SHMUP and it's pretty graphics are dead.

I'm going to be taking a week to sort everything out. I have yet to install Windows 7, as after so politely assuming I didn't just want to upgrade Windows XP, it couldn't use my SATA DVD-RAM drive to read several sectors on it's own disc.

And this on a disc that's never been used, and is in pristine condition.

My current task involves downloading an ISO, prepping a USB drive, and doing things that way.

Wish me luck.

There *MIGHT* be a Windows.old folder somewhere on the hard drive. Take a look around for it.

I hope you manage to recover your stuff. It's never fun to lose all your work. :(

Nope. Drive was completely wiped, all partitions removed, and the bootloader derped.

Since this was a 'slipstreamed' disc, it ran in auto-attend mode, so I didn't even get the opportunity to set up partitions or select an installation folder.

I'm going to run a few deep recovery utilities once I'm set up again. Might find some of my things, since they were in the outer sectors of the disc, and are therefore unlikely to have been overwritten by anything yet.

That's horrible. :(

Good luck! Keep us posted. :(

Why would you keep files on the desktop?

Because, like the site, I'm driven by laziness, and would rather have a folder on my desktop… actually, I could've just made a link. Oh well. No excuses, and I have no idea. :P

OK. Update. Went to store, got new disc, Windows is installed, and my system boots in four seconds flat, which actually frightened/startled me the first time it happened.

Now I'm thoroughly lost. Also, I couldn't recover anything. Multiple formats make things difficult.

Oh man, that really sucks. My condolences. I always backup the whole userdata folder – there's probably a lot of needless temp file crap in there, but I'm ridiculously paranoid about just this sort of data loss.

From now on, I'm really going to get into the habit of syncing my current projects and such to DropBox. I have no excuses now.

Will you still be able to work on Hunter and/or your shmup? :(

My god. I can only imagine the irl rage that followed this incident.
