Messing around with 3D Modeling

So…

Quote:
The peek I did take at this has gotten me interested in working on this sort of project myself; unfortunately for me, I'm a horrible modeler. Absolutely horrible. Let us not even talk about animation. And time. And… I shouldn't even be thinking about it.

That reminded me that I have something to show you. Even though I maintain that I am a horrible modeler with models unfit for use in animation or games, I'm practicing.

Recently, I figured out how to use projection painting to make texturing of complex models a breeze. Assuming you happened to have the right images to work with.

Anyway, yesterday I modeled a generic car. I call it the Megamobile.

Tip: Don't try draw the textures after you've created the model. Draw several reference images first, then the textures in the correct orthographic perspectives, then make the model using these images as references.

Still, it was far better than my last attempt at a car:

So, since my textures sucked, I decided to look for some stock images of a Ferrari F12, and:

Textures and stuff all warped on the sides, because my generic car model isn't shaped in the exact same way (And has no wheels, just wheel wells), but it's an interesting result; if I spent a bit of time on a model and a set of textures to go with it, I can easily envisage using more 3D assets in my games.

On that note, I've decided to have an art week as soon as I've finished hammering away at that A* implementation in Unity. I haven't composed a new complete track in ages, even though I've got ideas for tracks buzzing around the insides of my mind all day.

that looks pretty good. better than anything i could do. i only managed to make a few tutorial models and while i was surprised that they actually turned out okay, i'm still not exactly a fan of modeling. i find it to be tedious work, i'm just not interested in it. it's amazing you can try your hand at anything and do so well.

I expected to see some simple cube-based model and I got a car.

And here I am trying very hard to model a fucking sheeva and it isn't going well at all.

Get out with your shit.

EDIT: I am half inclined to steal you for modeling now.

It took me a long time to figure this stuff out; it's no easier for me than it is for anybody else, but thanks :P

WELL TECHNICALLY IT WAS A CUBE AT ONE POINT.

I have never modeled a car, but that is one weird looking unwrap :P

model is good though

can I see the topology on that?

Astryl 10 years, 10 months ago

Sure. And some wireframe.

No wheels, because I want those to be separate (Easier to animate and texture).

Yeah, my unwraps aren't great, because I'm still figuring them out in Blender :P

Cool stuff. I want to model some cars too for smashed brothers, I saw someone over at TIGforums rendering blender models as 2d pixel art and I want to try that, since drawing different angles of the car and getting them to match takes more time.
