Apparently, on Monday, Epic decided to spontaneously drop all subscription fees for everyone, making Unreal Engine 4 free for download and use for anybody.
The only fees still in place are those related to income (After a certain amount of income, you pay Epic 5% of the game's revenue). Here's the official blog:https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/ue4-is-freeI'm gonna get to downloading this when I get home.EDIT:In other news, Khronos has just officially announced the successor to OpenGL, to be called Vulkan
I highly prefer C#. C++ may have more control but there's a lot more work you have to put in for the things that C# does innately (which may be better or worse depending on the control you need). Despite this, I've recently had an inexplicable desire to make a game using C++ so I'll likely be spending some time with this. Ferret's suggestion of having a UE4 competition is actually very intriguing to me, other than the fact that using any 3D engine favors those with actual modeling skills.
Unity2D is pretty awkward at times but once you mess with it for a few minutes, it's really not that bad. It's still capable of making pixel games.Unity does have more restrictions in its free version for now, but who knows? Maybe this will cause them to rethink their business model.EDIT:I JUST found this.http://www.pcworld.com/article/2892314/unity-5s-new-full-featured-personal-edition-is-completely-utterly-free-to-use.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter#tk.rss_allMY LIFE IS COMPLETE.And Unity 5 just launched today.EDIT 2: Fuck you RC, you beat me to it.Well, now we all have two extremely powerful engines to choose from!
Oh my god. This is great! Finally I can make great games with full-featured tools legally! What a great time to live!
…If only I actually made games! So, we have Unity responding to UE4… and now we have Valve responding to both of them
Source 2 will be freely available to all developers. Though as the article points out, there's no talk of licensing/royalties yet.Woah, much exciting news.
Well, we'll have to have a "Big Engine" Jam or something now. With Cactus as the main theme. Get to work on that somebody.
Free Unreal Engine, free Unity and free Source 2? Wow, this world is amazing. Maybe I should give one of them (another) try?
In a "minor slap" to the Unity/Source 2 one-two punch, Microsoft is going to release the XBONE SDK for indie developers and otherwise. Just not yet.
