Worked some more on Vanguard today and decided to play around with the first level’s opening sequence. One thing I didn’t like about the original’s first level, is that you simply were at the beginning of the level with no clue how you had gotten there.
So now I’ve constructed a little Drop ship object to deploy our hero at the scene. It’s mostly an FX-travaganza, complete with friction burn, sparks, retro-rocket-fire and some clearing ‘fog’ as the drop ship capsule opens to reveal the player.Special deliveryI’m very happy of the result so far. It also gave me good excuse to practice with Audacity, the wonderful powerful yet still free sound editor. Still, I find myself grabbing SFXR a lot, as there isn’t an abundance of (good) free wav samples. I did make a freak find as I was looking for a sound for the ship opening up. I thought ‘airlock’ would be a good search term and I actually found a link about the Vanguard Airlock System (ahem). It featured a rather awesome speech file that said: “All Vanguard systems nominalâ€?,. Perhaps fun to add somewhere as an easter-egg :).
You're great with color limitations =)
And for sound effects, I always use trackers and the waveforms you can generateI'm always afraid to open up audacity because sometimes it makes my comter generate static, even after I close it.
The game sounds a bit cliched, but still, it looks good =D.I like.
Again, great job!
That's excellent. I really dig the 8-bit look.
Sounds easter eggs are awesome - this one's pretty much bullseye, although the femalish voice does not seem in line with the retro feel of the game. Some re-making may be appropriate. :)
(if I remember correctly, I put my own laughter and disfigured George Bush's "God bless America" in FFG ;))Yeah, I have been playing around with it a bit using Audacity, I've found some ways to make it more fitting.
The way it is isn't fitting indeed, but it remains a freaky awesome find :)Can't remember a distorted bush voice in FFG, but I guess I wasn't specificly paying attention for it either. Fun stuff :)
