Sending Laptop in, See you Laters [Kilin]

First blog in a few months. The last two were funny.

So yeah, just as the title says, I'm sending my laptop in for final repairs so I'll be good for at least another year. In this time, I will not be available online, so don't look for me, and please don't complain.

If you have added me as an MSN contact, you may find that I've been doing serious work on Lixies Arena. I've got a working online engine down, and I'm fairly confident that I can begin actual gameplay.

So, this being said, I may as well mention that I'm downgrading from Vista to XP. Why? Mostly because Vista takes up most of my RAM and running different things on it will often restrict use of the computer. It won't be for long at all, but I'll only downgrade when I'm sure I can work on GM7 games on XP, so I'll either need to convert them to GM6 or buy a new license.

Before you give me any more crap about Dell or Vista, let me point out that Dell and DHL have extremely fast work and delivery times, and I already have two out of three replacement parts for my computer, though I called two days ago. All I need to do now is get the LCD replaced and I'll be good to go.

Vista-wise, I still like it, but until I get a memory expansion, it's holding me back. I may not downgrade at all if I'm accepted to one of the jobs I applied for. After my laptop gets back, I'll work on upgrading a bit.

Final bit of news. I'm playing Fiesta on my spare time, so if anyone wants to play, give me a call.

Kilin, signing out for a few days.

Don't expect to get much more from XP, Vista is pretty good with it's memory management.

On a lighter note, you should be able to register your GM7, and if you can't, you should contact softwrap about it.

I think the rule is 3 simultaneous activations?

(Also, what's Fiesta?)

I use Vista, but I didn't choose it. It has it's pros and cons, it's not as compatible as XP, though it does look nicer. (:P) XP takes up less space running, but Vista can run things well given enough RAM. Personally I would've went with XP if I had the option, but I haven't had many problems with Vista yet.

What most people don't understand (Because most people, when given the phrase 'MSDN blog' run in fear) is that Vista uses about about as much RAM as XP. Under XP, Free RAM is RAM that's there to use, but under Vista, it's RAM that's wasted. Because Vista lives in an age where RAM, processor speed, and HDD space are plentiful, it actually uses it. When your PC is idle, it's not idle, it'll be running virus scans, defragmenting your drive, indexing your hard drive for instant search, and so. Any RAM not used by other applications is taken up with precaching, so your programs will start up and function faster, and the aero compositor, which so many assume takes massive amounts of RAM and processing power, is powered entirely by your graphics card, meaning there is absolutely no overhead.

Best thing about Vista, though? It's the latest OS, and as such, it's continually upgraded online. Vanilla Vista was shit for gaming, but as of this moment, it's only slightly slower for most things, and actually beats XP in many benchmarks. So, Quit giving Vista a hard time, guys :(

(BTW, Kilin, RAM is absolutely Dirt Cheap right now. Get a 1GB stick and put it in, rather than migrating OS, it'll be much faster and easier. You'll probably get that RAM for less than $40. It's about £20 over here, and you lot tend to get things cheaper)

One place where Vista does fail is the installation. 9GB wat?

I think PY is one of those secret Microsoft mind washer guys, and has a suit =P

I never understood why some of you guys are so obbsessive about OS's and memory and stuff like that.

In my opinion, if it works, who cares?

PY's little speech actually makes a lot of sense. It's shed a whole new light on this Vista thing for me.
