Game Maker's Fun and All, But...

First of all, welcome back, 64Digits.

Heard of RPG Maker? Of course you have. High quality engine designed for newbies, right? Is it just meant for idiots who don't know how to code in C++? Is it for making easy games?

Not at all.

Enterbrain's RPG Maker is a pretty interesting little engine. I recently picked up the latest copy, VX, and messed around with it a bit, and finally decided to work on one of my old games that Game Maker would have shunned.

If you picked up the engine, you may see they went back to old times with the "no-view" battler engine. I got a hold of some scripts to make it not so boring. That's the glory of this new engine, is that virtually everything is customizable. Game Maker is still my engine of choice but this seems a little more friendly. So I made a bit of a game so far.

Couldn't find one, I made a video some time ago, but it works. The game is based off of the Lufia series, and the music comes from almost everywhere…including those blasted built-in MIDIs I'm trying to get rid of.

There's a second part to the video as well.

Anyway, it's a simple cliche RPG, I'm sure. I'm new to the recent engine and…yeah.

By the way, if I get bashed for this, I don't give a damn, because those people are obviously idiots that aren't worth being recognized. There's a difference between criticism and bashing, and bashing is for children.

When I used RPG Maker back before I got into Game Maker, it sucked balls.

RPG maker is confusing to me.

Pff, RPG maker is just NOOB stuff, you don't need to learn coding or anything.

Because how good a game is totally depends on how hard it was to make, not how good it was. That's why 20 questions is more fun than tag.

I'm pretty sure tag was always more fun.. D:

I still play tag BTW.

oh sorry my sarcasm does not translate well over the internet.

Tag was great, 20Q was way harder to do and not as fun.

Assembly is much better. Not that I've used RPG Maker or anything.

I've used a small variety of programming languages, but look at it this way:

A player doesn't care what the hell a game was made with. A player wants to play a game for what's on the outside, not the inside. Thus, I'm not really worried about what people think about the engines I use. Look at Game Maker: pretty low quality program, but people don't care if you used Game Maker to make a good game. They just want to know that it's fun to play.

But developers do. and we're DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS

One of the downsides of using RPG Maker is that not a lot of users search for games made with the engine (I know I don't… I did once and it was pretty disappointing).

Also, Game Maker is pretty customizable too. The reason why there's not that many RPG games is that nobody ever picks up somebody else's work to continue and tries to make their own from scratch – only to give up halfway.

Have fun with RPG Maker, I know I did for a while. Then it got boring since I couldn't control everything like I can in GM. >_<

You know what's more fun than working with RPGMaker?

Working with Unreal Engine.
