Tell Me/Us What's Broken

Posted by Castypher on Aug. 14, 2010, 5:08 p.m.

I've cleaned up the Affiliates page quite a bit, but you probably didn't notice because nobody ever goes there. It's a forgotten area of the site that nobody's used for a long time.

But since it's a part of the site, and it's broken, it needs to be fixed, else it makes the site look bad.

I cleared out a ton of broken links, mostly (those with FTP access can find them in a text file if they want one restored). What still needs to be done though, and I'm waiting for confirmation on this:

- Many preview images are broken. If they are not replaced, I'll take them down.

- Many sites are old and haven't been touched for years. If I'm not told otherwise, they'll be taken down.

- Some sites have moved. Though the links aren't broken, the developer (bless his soul) has provided a redirect link. If I'm not told otherwise, the affiliate links will be changed to match the redirect.

I'll finish working on that later. I'm in no rush seeing as someone like DesertFox barely remembered that page existed. But since FSX brought it up the other day as well, I figured I'd go and fix it up a bit.

Dabridge, Kaz, and Aeron are doing much more work than me though, those bastards. >=[

I'm not really all that aware of everything that's broken, so if you have some time to write up a list of things YOU notice are broken, please do.

This blog (among others) can be referenced by anyone who's doing sitework at this time.

I work a lot better when I see the problems for myself, and what they are to other people. So like I said, please prepare a list of problems/suggestions (keep them minor for people like me), and we'll get to it as soon as possible.

To Do List:

- "Userpage at Login" checkbox locks you out of 64D

- Forum pages

- Referrals (working or make more available)

- File Manager upload failure

Will be filled out in the process

Also remember that not everyone is working on V2.

Thanks for your time, and let's see how quickly we can get things fixed up.

It's not a case of what you think other people should do, it's a case of people still using IE6 or older versions of browsers. Therefore, as someone providing a service, you should do your best to accommodate all of your users/customers.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Normally that's what I say, but when it's a matter of a free upgrade, it's a different story. Maintaining compatibility between Chrome, IE, and Firefox though, that's something to work for. Old versions? Not as much.

And if they pirated it and turned off updates, shame on them.

Lmao, nobody likes Chrome. But stupid IE users. Though the only real issue I have with it (besides security) is its speed. For some reason, both IE and Firefox are performing very slowly, and not using the Flash plugin right.

Like I said, the chances of a 64d user actually using IE6 is very low. But let;s say a couple of our users still used IE6. Should we avoid all the improvements to html/css/etc just because a very small minority of non-paying visitors use a 9 year old browser. I like to see it as support within reason, once a browser passes 5 years it's not really important and once it passes 8 years supporting it is a waste of time. Web technologies are changing too quickly right now and theres no good excuse for using such old browsers.

HTML5 and CSS3 are looking awesome and I would like to be able to use them sometime in this decade. But that wont happen with the "support everyone" attitude.

Also another thing that skews the data for IE6 is a lot of bots and things tell websites that they are IE6 even though they aren't. Just another thing that makes IE6 look more important than it really is.

I would suggest using all the HTML5 and top end features that you can, and then simply ripping them out one by one to support older and older browsers, until IE6 users get a skeleton of a website that is none-the-less usable. This is a lot more feasible if you build the whole functioning website first, then slowly make it compatible with the crappy IE versions.

That way, you can have your cake and eat it too, and you don't have to waste development time on IE6 problems, since you can delegate that to after the website is working on normal browsers.

UPDATE:

Affiliates page cleared of all broken links, old sites (not updated for more than a year), or sites without preview pics.

As you may notice (or won't because nobody visits it), there are very, very few entries left.

I thought about posting a list of all the sites that were taken down, but people will probably notice, and/or not care.

Kabob, your site didn't seem to have a tag of later than a year ago, but I hear enough about it to trust that you're working on it.

You may all now go to the Affiliates page and dance with glee because now the whole page fits on your screen.

Whats broken is that I do not have a fancy background.

I think people can use CSS now, try using that.
