64Completition Progress Check 2

Posted by Castypher on May 25, 2013, 10:24 a.m.

Okay, so this is only twelve hours late. But it didn't feel like very long since the last progress blog, mostly because it wasn't closed properly and we got some new blood. JakeX, Polystyrene Man, Zac1790, and Cosine have joined, bringing the list of games up to 21. The entry list is looking good, the progress looks amazing, and hopefully the result will be good as well.

So, summarize your second week for everyone just as you did last week. Even if you were only able to open up the source and make one change, that's still progress, though I hope you'll have more successful weeks in the future.

As far as the consecutive-three-week penalty is concerned, I'm considering exempting a few people from this until finals are over, though at the same time I don't think it's that hard to open up the file and make a quick change, at least during the usual school schedule. This goes especially for those who have the time to get on 64Digits every day.

Remember to list your achievements and your struggles, if that applies. You don't have to spoil the game in order to tell what kind of progress you've been making.

I started working on sprites this week, did a couple of walking animations. I redesigned the enemies to make them a little less generic.

I decided to stick to NES restrictions, so long as they don't complicate matters more than they simplify them. I'm hoping that putting some limitations in place will make the project more feasible.

Nothing much to show cause I was sick most of last week.

-I got the AI to walk up blocks.

-Made blocks auto tile

-This is here to make it look like I've done more

-Fixed weird sprite issue

That's about it…

I am jealous of your graphics. Make sure shadows go over other things properly; the snow in the shadow of that tree looks too bright.

I spent the weekend helping my brother move into his new apartment, so I didn't get much done. However, I did get one very important piece of code up and running this afternoon:

I might've changed a pixel or two on one of the sprites.

I'm going for a super-minimalist thing here, I was not anticipating anyone actually liking these graphics, it's just a means to an end. So, thanks. :D

As for the shadows… I'll fix that by moving the snow somewhere else, the shadows are currently just drawn on the deepest layer, and I don't see much point in spending more time making it more complicated.

If anyone is looking for good recording software, look at Open Broadcaster Software. It's the best video recording software I've ever encountered; didn't even have to close any programs to get a smooth video, and it exports to a small filesize.

@Cosine You know, the irony of things is that I'm about to upgrade to Windows 7, just for that software… And then I read this…

I have to say I see some great progress being made here. Now I know I didn't officially sign up, but rest assured, I'll be participating in one way or another.

On one hand I'm helping Cesque by composing music for FireBug. I've got some material down and a general idea of where to take it, but it still has to be finished/refined before the 'tition is over.

Now, on the other, I have this:

My guess is that half the people who clicked made a gross-face when they saw ASCII. The other half understands where I'm coming from and sent me a silent nod of approval over the internet. The good news for the former camp is that I do have plans for a tile-based interface, which shouldn't be too hard to implement with my current codebase.

But yeah I'm having too much fun putting this together. So be it for the completition or for my own satisfaction, I am determined for this game to see the light of day.
