FF Goal and Emulator Question

Posted by Glen on Oct. 20, 2010, 8:59 a.m.

So, I'm a big fan of FF and I have a new goal. At the moment I'm downloading FF 1-12 and the emulators to play them. I'm going to go through them all and beat them one by one. Just so I can say that I played them all. Can't be a fan unless you've been there done that.

I have a question about emulators though. Think there's a way to make a game + emulator work on a disk? Like an auto start? Have the emulator auto start and play the game? It would be nice to be able to have my collection of Final Fantasy games all on disks and be able to just pop them into a cd drive and play. Some of the games have different emulators because the first few were on the NES, SNES, PS1, and PS2. I'd like to have the emulator on the disk and run off of it.

You could have the emulator use a command to automatically load a game through the properties and add in the command in the "Start In" input. Although I don't know if all or any emulators support this.

BTW, you're going to have problems with FF9+. From what I remember, FF9 was still very buggy. I doubt you'll get anything after that to work since PS2 emulators are 100% shit still. The only game I got to run properly was Disgaea.

I've played most of the FF games after 8. Played, FF8,FF10,FF12. Haven't played FF9 or FFX2. And 1-7 I've never played so I'm mainly wanting to play those and see how the older versions are. Everyone says the storylines of 1-5 were better than the rest.

You've played them on an emulator? If so, they have progressed quite a lot since last year O_O

Nope, just stating that I played them beforehand so if they don't work well on the emulators, then I won't be so disappointed with those versions. I'm mainly concerned with the 1-7.

Final Fantasy VI is the best, imo. I think VII was overhyped and still is :) The Auto-Start process you're looking for is likely dependent on the emulator your using and if it supports Autostart.

My favorites have been 8 and 10. 12 didn't have a good story in my opinion. Wasn't really interested. I guess I'm a fan of the romance and drama that was involved in 8 and 10. It got really personal with the characters.

Then you will absolutely love FFVI, FFVII felt a bit…forced at times.

I honestly know nothing about the 7th one. Except the all-time favorite "Cloud" came from it. So I'm looking forward to playing it through and seeing what all the hype is about. I'm pretty sure most of the FFVII fans haven't actually played it through.

Oh, I'm sure most have, but I'm sure that's where they started, too. FF - FFVI are all 2D games, and FFVII entered the 3D genre, which is where its real claim to fame is. Don't get me wrong, its not a bad game at all, but I just believe its overhyped.

On another note, any word on your Autostart setup(s)?

I need to find a way to set the default program for the .nes file to be opened up with the emulator located on the CD. Idk how to do this without manually doing it.

If there's a way to do this with GM, I could make a little program that sets the default program to be the emulator on the CD and have the gm program start the game. I would just have the CD autorun the gm program.exe.
