Midnight randomness

Posted by Glen on Oct. 21, 2010, 11:03 p.m.

So it's 5 til midnight in my area and I feel like making a blog. Here's a bunch of random questions and updates to spark a convo.

1. Is anyone in the process of making an RPG? I'd be interested in testing it.

2. Can someone delete Ancient Ants Adventure from my "Favorite Games" list? The game doesn't exist in the database anymore and the option to remove it is not there because of this.

3. Have any of you played Final Fantasy 1 for the NES, not the ds/psp remake? It's so much fun. I'm about 1/4 done with it.

4. Do any of you like Tacos? I just woke up from a dead sleep thinkin tacos and immediately drove to Taco Bell and got me some delicious Chalupas. I think i'm good now. I might be able to sleep knowing that my stomach has been satisfied to no end.

5. Does anyone like the bright banner I found? I'm aware that it might hurt some eyes, but I thought it looked pretty.

6. Thinking about continuing a story I began to write in January. I don't know if any of you remember me starting a project called Ember Skies? It was originally going to be an RPG. I have 3 chapters + a prologue written. Might continue it.

7. I fail at staying on track when it comes to my online game "Aeon". Just thinking about writing online code makes me wanna go to sleep.

8. Got a B on an exam today. Music Appreciation. Basically a class on Musical History and origin. Classic stuff. Totally guessed on it. Pretty proud of myself. All I do is draw abstract and vector art in my notebook in class.

9. So I met this girl a few weeks ago and we've been getting really close. She has a bf though. The chick kept coming up to me, and kissing me, and trying to get her bf to break up with her. Then I find out that she "has" to get married in a year and stay married for 5 years so she can get her citizenship in the US…. smile and wave? Told her to stop cheating on her bf. Talk to me in 5 years.

10. Last but not least. I have a thing for triangles. They look awesome. ▲

If any of you have a decent amount of it done with let's say a mission/quest available for testing, let me know.

Depends on how much time you want to put in for a run. Though, since you said you wanted to test an RPG, I'm assuming you don't mind it being just a bit lengthy.

Nah, I've been in a RPG mood and would like to see more GM RPG's actually in progress. I hate seeing ideas and to-do lists that seem promising but fail to get anywhere. I think Ark 22 is the only realy GM RPG I've played.

The reason I started doing RPGs is because to me, it's one of the more underdone genres in GM. Probably because it's a bit more difficult to do than a platformer, or Click the Clown.

Try Dubloon. It's pretty short and isn't too original (Well, it's about pirates..), but it's not bad.

A bit? My 2000+ lines of declaring variables, or 1000+ unfinished pause menu (excluding many scripts to remove repetition) draw event for the menu would like to speak with you… Although that "a bit" was most likely sarcasm…

If only your keen eye were just a bit faster.

By the way, I hope you're not overcomplicating the pause menu. 1000 lines is overkill. Try using instance deactivation; it actually works very well.

I think I might start working on my RPG eventually. I have all the basic systems done. Last time I worked on it, I stopped coding and was writing the story up.

Story should probably be one of your top priorities, or at least the basic plot. Any side-missions or branches can be saved for later.

Though, it's good that you decided to get the systems done too. That tends to be the hard part, and once finished, you have an engine, and all that's left is the content.

RPGs, despite what most people have said, aren't all that hard to make in Game Maker. They're time-consuming but to a skilled programmer, it's really pretty simple. The hard part is coming up with something actually original.

Well, if you're really willing to test some things and give advice, I'm sure several people, including myself, would love to have some help. One big reason people drop their projects is because they have no support or motivation (both internal and external). Already you're helping with that.

i would like to make some kind of RPG if i could think of something new and interesting to do with the genre. hmm.. what parts specifically do you play RPG games for? the quests/missions, the exploring, or just the building up of stats etc?

my current project only has the latter two, i could maybe add quests but since the whole thing is randomly generated i wouldn't want you to be getting same quests over and over again…

edit: Kilin is right, stories are important for RPGs too.. might be better to start a separate project for this one, hrm.

Of course I have the menu deactivate all objects. I was talking about the inventory menu / skills menu / etc when I said pause menu.
