Sadness, despair, and other melancholic words.

Which luckily, this blog has little do to with.

warning, if you're not interested in nostalgic rants, and grandiose thinking, this may not be the blog for you.

My thoughts

So, I've been a frequenter of 64Digits since early 2006, a whole 6 years have passed since then, and a lot has changed. V2 came around, and after god knows how long, so did V3. I remember the days where marbs, desertfox, sleepingjohnnyfish, jakex, that joshdreamy guy, twisterghost and people of the such were here, developing games and other cool things. When blogs weren't only about how much we hated each other, and how sad we were.

What I'm trying to get at is, 64D is the place I came when I was young, and was just starting to develop games. There were people I looked up to, people I aspired to be. Now, I don't want to burst any of your bubbles, but it's no longer the same. Maybe it's for the better, or maybe not, but personally, I don't like it.

When I hear people say "64Digits is dead," it get's me thinking. 64D was the place for GM users to come and chat, without being bombarded by morons (ex, the GMC). The amount of GM users has only increased, and GM is getting more and more advanced, albeit rather slowly, but still advancing nonetheless. With GM:Studio here, it's opened GM up to more professional users, and more possibilities. GM is evolving, but we here at 64D have been stagnant since 2009.

Personally, I really think 64D is capable of being something much larger and greater. It's well known, well respected, and it's got a great community (there's a lot of us 'old beans' still around).

So, I think 64Digits should expand. It should expand its focus, its userbase, and most importantly, its goals. However, I don't think this is possible with the way the site is set up currently. Honestly, I can't tell if 64D is a game development community, or a blogging community with some game developers. Heck, maybe everyone is fine with that, and if that's the case, disregard this.

So I want to hear your guys opinions. Are you happy with what 64D is now? Would it be worth reevaluating things?

I have the same opinions on it, I remember how popular all those users were, and the games they made. I miss those days. ;-;

Way I see 64D is now it's more for a bit of everything. We have artists, game designers, game designers using something other than GM, musicians, writers, and even though game design with GM is still the primary focus, we've simply branched out in terms of what we do, and that just happens with time with pretty much any community, especially one with a name such as ours.

I could see if we were called 'GM Digits' or '64 Gamemaker' but '64 Digits' wth does that even mean? It just means we can be whatever we happen to want to be.

This is just in my opinion. I have noticed the extreme rise in depression and feely feel blogs, but there's nothing we can really do about that without placing strict communist rules on 'expressing feels, bro'.

I'm personally fine with how it is, as I don't get mixed up in any of the drama going around and mind my own business and watch the cool people still left make cool stuff and do cool things.

That's sort of the thing I'm trying to get at, there are people with all these great skills, but, apart from blogs, no way to showcase them.

When you look at TIGsource, they're primarily a game dev forum, but they've got people with tons of skills, the thing they have that we don't, is the encouragement to talk with others and collaborate.

If GM has gotten more members, why does it seem like the GMC is much more dead than it was in the past…

Also, I plan on releasing some projects on here (api), and there are some updates on other games in the making. I also like to post game ideas if anyone wants to collab or take it and go with it.

But I agree that V4 seems pretty cool and you guys might as well go for it since we dont have much to lose.

(as long as people dont delete the backups)

I can only speak from my experience, but when YoYo took over and started making changes to the forums, it was all downhill from there. I only check it out once a month to see if there's anything cool; there usually isn't.

I still used to frequent GM before YoYo got to it.

YoYo was the deathblow the GMC in my eyes. Compare 64D to GMC now and 64D suddenly looks like a 12 year old kid hopped up on sugar.

People say this? Who? Why? 30 years from now will there be a large internet diaspora claiming to be true 64Digits members? Can one person be more 64Digits than another? Are there different kinds of 64Digits? Does 64Digits have a distinct quality to it or can anyone join 64Digits? Are skinheads real 64Digits? What about when 64Digits sells out? Should FSX start selling shirts?

I don't agree about 64D being stagnant since 2009. 64D was pretty cool back in 2010 and 2011 when everyone was excited about minecraft and we had a ton of marathons and other smaller stuff. but, this site does seem pretty uneventful lately.

I haven't been signing in much lately, just lurking and such, because nothing really interesting has been going on here really, from what I've seen.

I dunno, it doesn't really seem like anyone's doing anything, really. It seems like the whole competition craze has run out of steam as well. but i don't really care about that, the whole competition thing was getting exhausting anyway.

I've actually been kind of tempted to try and collab with a few people around here for my next project, but I keep moving between pc's, even during the S4D comp. and all of them have been pretty slow and really crappy, so i just have to wait it out and buy a few things to fix my original one. I have actually gotten a nice amount of work done on a few games in between some switches, but I've mostly been writing down ideas and drawing things for them.
