Random idea: "64Resource"

Posted by HeroofTime55 on Sept. 16, 2006, 12:10 p.m.

So basically, it would be an extension of 64Digits. Only instead of uploading games and examples, you upload game resources: Sprites, Backgrounds, Sounds, Scripts… Whatever. This would provide a great resource database for newer GM users, would provide a search tool to look for whatever you might need, and if someone uses your resources, it helps get your name out there! And it would greatly benifit 64Digits as well, it would definatly go towards making this the best gamemaker site ever (as if it wasnt already :P)

EDIT: It could also upload d3d models, now that i think of it, because you can save and load 3D models through GML :P

Besides, this could be implemented into the user profiles. Instead of just showing games and examples, you could add sprites, backgrounds, scripts, sounds, and music to the list.

Musiclib may be a seperate site, but 64 doesn't want to alienate the sites that sprung from it.

The thing is, you're suggesting an instant replacement with a pre-built userbase to what I've been building for half a year now. That's not a nice thing.

I don't want to have to compete with an already big site - it's like starting a software company, writing something unique, then having microsoft use its massive userbase to squash you with their own product.

And your "but this could be implemented into profiles" argument is completely invalid. I could already implement musiclib stuff into 64digits profiles, as either site can access the other's database.

I dont mean to offend. I dont enjoy suggesting something that would intrude on what youve done, but it seems illogical to leave some things out, or to drop this idea simply because it might waste one person's efforts on something else (no offense FB…)

Now, you bring up that each site can access eachothers databases. Perhaps music and sound will be already covered by music lib, and searchable on 64D (only returns results from 64D users, not all of musiclib)? or do you object to anything being linked to 64D? As what i would suggest wouldnt actually go to the musiclib site, it would show a 64D style page that links to the musiclib file. And uploading directly from 64D. Of course, there'd be a "hosted by musiclib" linky thing.

Now, musiclib would have a wider selection, because it includes all 64D sounds, and those of non 64D members, and it gains the 64D userbase. Is that an acceptable plan that dosent throw you into a rage? >.<

Ooh! An idea to be shot down, oh boy!

Anyway, HeroofTime55, we really wouldn't be helping anybody by creating said resource database. It would end up like the GM Resource Packs: The resources are decent, but they're used so much any games made with them are instantly degraded. Plus, we're having a hard enough time accepting new submissions in a timely manner as it is.

But the thing is, there'd be much wider variety than a few in a resource pack. And i wasnt thinking of having mods accept them, as they wouldnt display on the front page like games :P

But whatever. I guess the idea's dead then :(

You're still suggesting merging a site that just got it's own sign of independance into a sort of parasitic oran for 64digits. And scrapping all my code.

HeroofTime55 18 years, 4 months ago

But you just argued that my statement was invalid because you could link the databases. And now you go and reject that same idea…. >.<

It dosent even matter, the idea is dead anyway.

No, I'm responding to the "oh, then you can make 90% of musiclib part of 64digits" suggestion.

i didnt say destroy the entire musiclib site. i suggested 2 ways to access the music. it seems more logical than splitting it amongst sites.

it sounds like you simply want no relation between 64digits and music/sound uploading. You could have just said that.

And my suggestion, anyway, was more like part of musiclib extending to reach 64digits users, not the other way arround. I didnt mean "screw all of musiclib and make it part of 64digits", i refered to a way to access the musiclib database from 64digits, while keeping musiclib a different site.

Musiclibs a great site, but i dont think 64Digits has to be limited because of it's existance. Im simply trying to find a solution that would allow for 64digits to have a music and sound database without destroying musiclib. Not that it matters, JakeX killed the idea. But realize i'm not anti-musiclib. Which it seems your thinking i am, to the point of misinterpreting me. Or looking back at the comment, i might have worded it wrong. Its just that musiclib it… well, it dosent look as nice as 64D, and its not the same system of showing the work. And it would be quite confusing if several different sites were used for each resource, with different formats for everything, would it not?

I just dont understand why you hate most things i say that relates (or sometimes dosent) relate to you. Its happened way too many times, you make a very… vocal… point that you disagree with me, to the point of, apparently, hating me. It happened on GMclans, and im prety sure on ROPW as well. I dont get it. Honestly, youre the only person i ever have these lengthy arguments with, and its happened on several occasions.
