Movies nowadays.....

Are running out of ideas, it's official.

and I still don't know wtf this is:

I think movies were in their prime in the late 80's and 90's.

Now, I seriously think that video games are going to replace movies one day, and then when video games start to run out of ideas, then something else will be popular, I just don't know what… All hope for humanity is lost.

It seems funny to me to decry the originality of television and film and then announce you're going to go play some video games. While there's certainly a lot of untapped potential in the medium, originality is not something it currently holds. For example, GameSpot's 'best original mechanic' for 2010 went to Vanquish, a third person cover shooter.

Apparently they gave that specifically for a "rocket sliding mechanic", which I quite vividly remember seeing in a popular Unreal Tournament mod back in 1999…

For me personally, I can never honestly say there's a golden era to any form of media. Out of nowhere, there can come a work that either encapsulates or redefines the medium its made in. Yes, the 90's gave us some good flicks, but so did the last decade. I don't think there's ever a good year for any media, because while pioneers are hard at work, there's still crap out there acting as the proverbial rough for the diamonds that are the films you actually remember.

1999 gave us American Beauty, Being John Malkovich, Fight Club

…and Wing Commander and Wild Wild West. :\

I'm trying to be optimistic, but the amount of originality in film does seem to be at an all time low, I'll give you that.

Problem is movies are the most expensive that they've ever been, so the bottom line is more important than the artistic quality of the movie.

All that CGI? It's awesome as hell, I give you that, but it is bloody expensive and guarantees that the movie will not be original.

AND DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE TRY TO CALL AVATAR ORIGINAL OR EVEN GOOD.

I think that CGI is making movies worse, the better the CGI gets, the worse the movie.

while I bet that filmmakers think that the better CGI, the better the movie.

So bottom line, great CGI != a great movie.

Well not the worse the movie is. The less original it is. Producers would rather not lose millions on a flop, so they invest on movies people would watch. Action films with tons of CGI.

Avatar is the most original movie ever. More original than Dances with Wolves…
I agree, it was the most original movie ever, it was also the best movie of all time, with an incredibly deep story and characters, that won't be topped in cinema ever again.
