Musical Advent Calendar + Let's Talk About Christmas

Hey guys! I'm in the midst of making an Advent Calendar of free music, mostly of the "sloppy folk songs recorded on any of several tape machines in varying states of disrepair" variety, kind of inspired by the cassette albums I used to make with my brothers when I was a kid. Some of the songs are happy, some of them are sad, all of them are a bit of a mess. These are the ones I've done so far:

Summoning Ritual

Regression Sickness, Parts I & II

The Landing

[Instrumental]

Pink Plastic Tree Song

Idyll No. 1 (Parking Lot Scene)

Snowfall

Regression Sickness, Part III

If you want to follow along, that'd be great. I'll be posting them to my SoundCloud each day: https://soundcloud.com/hlemke

While we're on the subject, I'd really like to know some things about you. Christmas is a time thick with memories for most people I know, and that's by turns beautiful and kind of oppressive. So: what about you?

Do you actually like Christmas? What are some of your strongest memories from this time of year? Does it mean anything in particular to you? What makes it hard/nice for you? etc.

Go!

My parents have always been total buzzkills when it comes to the holidays, so while we would always do the traditional Christmas things (decorating, midnight mass, the whole nine yards) its never really been any fun. I kinda just celebrate it robotically and move on. If anything, its a tedious task in the middle of an otherwise welcome break.

The jingles are nice though. Christmas tunes are always catch and upbeat.

It's always been a family tradition to have a big lunch, lots of family around the table… My fondest Christmas memories were of the Christmas days I spent when my grandparents were still alive (And before a large portion of my family stopped contacting each other).

What makes it nice for me is that the family gets to sit down and eat, talk, generally lay back a bit and not worry about work, school or financial trouble. We prepare the food in large amounts, the day before, have ample supplies of baked goods, salads, drinks, etc, and generally live off cold-meats and salad 'til New Years.

Steven's cheerfulness makes me want to give me hugs.

For Thanksgiving, I was thankful for Steven! :D

Also: I love Christmas. I've gone to quite a few funerals between around the Holiday season, but my family always makes a big deal of spending it happy. We used to get together, as a huge family, but with the elders dying or being in fragile states, its mostly just the close relatives (mom, dad, siblings) that get together on holidays. But its fun and relaxing, nonetheless. Holidays are sad when thinking about the past, and great when thinking about the present and future, for me.

We went to Kraynak's (a Christmas/Toy store with a large animatron display) today, with Finn. He, suprisingly, was extremely receptive and VERY happy to see everything. And recognized the "kitties" (all animals are kitties).

@Acid - that's a great perspective. It's really hard for me not to focus too much on the past - it's sort of an issue for me in general - but holidays can be wonderful if you don't approach them in the hopes that they'll measure up to some crazy thing you've idealized in your head. That goes for all of life, but it's really hard for me with holidays. Possibly because my family was a lot less messy when I was younger, and holidays kind of bring that to the forefront.

i did another song as well: https://soundcloud.com/hlemke/snowfall

Advent Calendars are commonly used to 'count down' to Christmas.

I''m not really such a huge fan of Christmas. Almost every year it drives my mom to nervous breakdown, especially when my brother forgets to buy her something.

I do like what Bad Religion did this year though.

Punk/Metal versions of Christmas songs are songs that I want to listen to all year… and sometimes do. :P

Gotta say, I wouldn't have expected that from Bad Religion. I was worried it'd be a parody or something.
