Joewoof's Sentiments I

Posted by Joewoof on June 3, 2006, 10:50 a.m.

I better express my thoughts in writing than in words. Debate forums on controversial issues are great places for philosophical inspirations and reflections. The problem, however, is that forums are not exactly the best places to log your thoughts (more likely the opposite). Blogging, on the other hand, is perfect. :D

The following is from my post in GMG's Controversial Discussions subforum. Make of it however you will.

Meaning of Life

Life is only a part of the cycle of fate, in which you weave your purpose and set about to fulfill that purpose to the best of your ability. And since your fate is undoubtedly interconnected to that of others, others have the ability to change your fate, as well as change your purpose, and vice versa. Looking at it from another angle, part of your purpose must have something to do with the rest of your fellow men, preferably to help them as they may help you.

Of course, that is positive idealism. Some people believe that their purpose is to satisfy their needs, be it wealth, love, acceptance or acknowledgement. I believe that aiming for those is not wrong, but aiming for them ALONE is being selfishly ignorant that others, including lives that are not human (eg. animals, plants), are worth much more than tools or obstacles to reach your goal.

And what makes life is infinitely magnificient is that it is not a constance - not eternal. Life is created. Life is grown. Life decays. Life ends. Then life is again reborn, but I believe that the rebirth is completely irrelevant, as if your soul remains intact, it will no longer be "your" life, but the life of another reality. All this allows you to appreciate life and live it to the fullest, as time is short.

However, you have to search for your purpose with great patience, yet maintain a high level of diligence. Neglect and merely following the path of others will not bring you and your fellow men true happiness. Rushing into the path less taken with little thought will bring about your own disaster. Always search, but always take great care, and never stop searching.

Once you find it, hold on to it, as it will be the fire that drives the wind of your fate. It will serve as the earthly footing for your spiritual foundation and keep you calm and focused.

Life without a purpose is life without a point. Life without a point is a life not worth living.

The meaning of life is actually not as elusive as some people may believe it to be. It is all about discovering your spiritual identity and realizing what you mean in the big scheme of the web of intertwining fates in the harsh reality of the world.

PS: What's with the new "Stats HP" feature? Looks pretty cool. Hope the front page is fixed soon, so we all can see what this new thing is about. :)

But what if your purpose is to follow others? perhaps I'm a bit too cynical sometimes, but allow me to play devil's advocate here, and take a look at history.

I'm sure you can name some of the people who have done great things off the top of your head. Einstein, da Vinci, Elvis… These kinds of people are few and far in between. The rest of the people are just background to these people. Could it possibly be that many of these people's purpose was, in fact, to be background to the greats of their eras?

For the record, I think your life is what you make it, and if you believe you have some great purpose, then in one way or another, you will. Just wanted to make you think! [:P]

That was deep and true.

Fred, if what you say is true, I'd like to think of it not as "serving as the background" for the great people, but "serving as the backbone", instead. :)

Good point!
