Finally.

I've been doing a little more work on my platformer recently. Almost close to the time to release a demo, but I'd need to make 2 levels and a nice menu first.

Well, I'd appreciate tips if you have any, specifically about the platformer genre. This is my second game anyways. I haven't played many, but I'm trying to think about what people look for in platformers; likes and dislikes, things people want to see, things that shouldn't be in one. Now in case you're wondering what kind of platformer I'm doing, it's shooting/ puzzle based. What do people expect in terms of levels, bosses, and so on. Any tips would be great.

Story, I haven't come up with yet, but it's something along the lines of searching for the same material your craft is made out of. In this case for gameplay, the craft is that metal box thing you see in this and previous screenshots. It has a shield, gun, and electric rope ability (kinda like the one in UT2004.) You will be able to level up in the future. Also a scanning mode to check if certain things have any amount of electricity or metal running through them, like the radar above that shows metal located under certain platforms. And with the metal stuff in mind, the grapple hook is different than regular grapple hooks - this one uses a new type of electricity to attach onto any metal surfaces, or any surfaces containing metal. That means the places you can attach on is going to be strategic, obviously. Since the current runs from your box to the grapple, you never lose speed while swinging. In order to use the previous weapons mentioned you must not be in grapple mode. More stuff later, I plan to make this an interesting combination of genres.

So, I've also been looking at the new Starcraft 2. I didn't expect Blizzard to come out with it, but they did. And I have a feeling it's gonna be a success too; none of their games have ever been anything but that , eh?

Starcraft is one of the best games for the PC, and it's even harder to make sequels to any perfect game. But obviously, we'll see if Blizzard does it or not. I've played SC recently, only to lose interest in it because so many people are so far ahead of new comers. Thanks to SC 2, everybody gets a chance again, because of the new changes. How nice.

It's good to see some nice Boss Battles every once in a while… By that I mean, come on people, start using the timeline feature!

Ooh, nice looking screen you got there. I really loved Kairuga, it was so good that it managed to convince me to buy Ikaruga :)

As for what makes a good platformer; just take a look at Within A Deep Forest + Knytt by Nifflas, Cave Story by Pixel and maybe throw in Poyo for a GM reference. These games are all quite different from each other, yet manages to be examplary pieces of platform goodness.

As most would tell you, out of the four games mentioned Cave Story is the most enjoyable (and popular) because of it's way of integrating the story with the gameplay (among other things). However, the common trait all of these games share are style and polish.

Amd as always, throw in some variation and creativity, but I guess that goes without saying.

Looking forward to playing this sometime in the future.
