Malaika - 3D modeling

Posted by Malaika on July 29, 2006, 6:09 a.m.

I've been playing around with 3D Studio Max recently. Just making things, deleting them, making them again, deleting them again, etc…

Well, here are a couple of shots of a gal's torsothat I whipped up in about 45 mins. They're untextured, but I think its kinda neat. Its useless for anything important, but I suppose its really just for practice.

In other news, our webcomic may be getting an overhaul. We've come up with a new storyline that could be kinda funny. A little silly but you know…

My graphics tablet STILL hasn't arrived and I'm getting kind of annoyed. And my car still isn't fixed cos I'm too lazy to book it into the mechanic.

Danse Machina is coming along. I changed the look and feel of the servo-arm (it shoots electric 'grabber' beams with the middle mouse button - the grabbing is better now too). New explosions courtesy of Explogen (if anyone knows any way to make really nice explosions, please let me know).

I still need to get started on the first level, but its all plotted out so it won't be drastically difficult.

The menu looks slick, and there are a couple new weapons as well as tweaked old ones.

I'm stuck with Canvas. I can't figure out how to make it take a screenshot of the WHOLE canvas - it will only take the shot if its in the window. Annoying. Also, I'm running into problems resizing the window. I have no idea whats wrong with it. I'll get it though.

And I thought I was doing too many things at once. Get Canvas working as it should first, as there are people - like me - who probably can make real good use of it. :)

Oh, by the way, Canvas has a new version. Its much better, although you can still only export a maximum size of 1024x768

I wish I knew how to do 3D stuff….

Not like it matters, I'm getting rid of GM soon.

Nice avatar, BTW.

Have the canvas itself draw on a surface, then save that (I think gm has a function for that, anyway…)

Yep, it does:

surface_save(id,fname) Saves a bmp image of the surface in the given filename. Useful for making screenshots.

just use that on the canvas surface and it should save teh whole thing, not just the onscreen portion.

ooh thats a good idea I should have thought of that. Thanks FB!

Flashback beat me to it. I was going to suggest that.

If that doesn't work, have it jump positions around the room, saving screens, and stitch them together.

the best thing i've ever done with 3d is make a textured box with cylinder legs. I don't think i will ever break the 2d barrier with my games. But yeah I'm waiting for Canvas too. Myabe i could like somehow use it to help me make a level e….oops….too much info.

Wow, you did a really good job. I'm just learning how to make 3d objects and the best thing I've made so far is this: planet.png

Though I added the stars with GIMP.)
