iSad

Why? Because despite telling myself that the iPad is a moronic, useless slate of shit that I'd never even consider buying… somehow I let someone convince me that I really, really need to get one.

It was actually the awesome show CO-OP that convinced me, during their coverage of some iPad games. During said coverage, I happened to realize that the iPad is also the perfect device for consuming manga digitally. You can read manga on a laptop yes, but a laptop is woefully over-sized for the task, and the screen orientation and the input methods don't suit the task very well either. The iPad, on the other hand, is simply perfect for it.

So yeah. Besides having some pretty neat games on it, it also happens to be a great device for watching tv and movies, and reading books and manga. And by great, I mean better than a laptop. If you're using the device for these purposes, it just makes much more sense than a laptop. Surfing the web is another matter, but even without Flash, I'm sure that browsing the web is a delight on the iPad.

So now I have many questions I'm struggling with:

How much storage space do I need?

Do I spend the extra $130 for the 3G model?

Can I think of any flaw that could possibly change my mind? Please?!

Theres gonna be much better Windows 7 based alternatives soon enough, I'd never waste my money on an iPad. The HP Slate looks pretty awesome compared to the iPad and Windows 7 was designed for touch screens.

Eh, that HP Slate doesn't seem significantly better. The only thing it has that the iPad should have is an SD slot.

I don't really see a webcam being of much use on a tablet device. You're not going to be holding it up level to your face to video chat with people, and who wants to take pictures with a damn tablet?

Also USB and an actual OS.

USB is a feature the iPad doesn't have, but it's not something i'd use anyway.

And an "actual" os? besides having very little benefit as far as I can tell, it probably also helps explain why the HP Slate has half the battery life of the iPad.

That's why you get a netbook for 350 like I did.

if you pay more than that then you can play real games too like bioshock two or whatever and watch movies in 1080p not 720p.

Also you'll be able to keep all your manga on the computer if you really want. also an internet card or package is much cheaper for a netbook

Yeah, it's not perfect for playing games. Of course it's not gonna replace my PS3 as my primary gaming platform. That being said, the games are part of why I'm interested in it.

Show me one with 10+ hours of battery life and a 1024x768 touchscreen that I can comfortably use in portrait orientation.

And as for gaming and manga, well I've already got devices that could do these things. I'm not getting rid of my PS3. And hell, if I were desperate enough, I could read manga on my PSP Go. The reason the iPad is appealing for reading is because of its form factor, and the reason its appealing for gaming is it's giant touchscreen.

I've decided I'm not going to get the 3G model, as there's plenty of wi-fi hotspots for me to use here. And when I leave here, I'll be on a ship, which makes internet access unobtainable even with 3G.
