First day with iPod Touch

Yesterday was my first day using my iPod Touch, so I figured I'd share my initial impressions of the device.

I'll start with iTunes. I've used iTunes before, but it's been over a year. When I first tried iTunes on the PC many years ago, I hated it. Super sluggish. On OS X though, I love iTunes. It feels much snappier, performance-wise. Well I'm back to using it on Windows this time. And it's still somewhat sluggish. But on a positive note, it is more feature-rich than the Zune software.

Now onto the iPod itself. Due to its larger size, I've been having some mild difficulties in trying to use it single-handed like I did with my Zune HD. Slowly I'm getting used to it.

An area where the iPod has definitely disappointed me is that the Photos app doesn't support subfolders. So all my manga nicely organized into subfolders by series, volume, and chapter does me no good when synching it to the iPod. I'm going to have to convert 'em to PDFs and view them in iBooks if I want to enjoy any semblance of organization in that area.

The display is everything I'd hoped it would be. I can read manga clearly without having to do any zooming/scrolling.

By far the biggest problem I'm having it is trying to use it in bed, since tilting the device sideways tilts just about everything sideways. Or causes it to enter a useless feature like Coverflow. Nevermind, figured out how to lock it in portait. =D

One thing I like is that unlike a lot of devices, it'll connect to an ad-hoc network. Awesomesauce.

Compared to the Zune's headphones, the headphones that come with the iPod are… ahahaha j/k, haven't even touched the iPod headphones. Why would I when I have a pair of Klipsch Image S4 headphones?

So anyway, I'm enjoying it for the most part.

Good choice with ignoring the iPod earphones… worst earphones ever IMO. terrible sound quality, you have to wear them the wrong way round to actually hear anything. And they are really quiet, but everyone else can her what you're listening to better than you can. and oh god they are painful……

not a fan of Apple and their tyrant prices at all… calling the "iPod Touch" a music player is an insult to all other music players. Frankly if i'm gonna buy something from Apple it's gonna be the iPod classic. the Touch just doesn't cut it. to get half the memory on an Touch requires double the money then a Classic. making the Touch 4 times more expensive, failing as a music playing device. besides it's main focus is the gimmicky touch-screen and crap apps.

though personally i also hate iTunes and i would hate to use it just to get music onto a music device… that's why i have a 2006 Creative Zen Vision:M it's really old now but it still works great. bought it for $100 with 32gb.

High-end in-ear headphones - why? All the cool audio snobs go old-school.

Lol wait you see what I did there? Cos there are no cool audio snobs.

They do!

My dad is one up them: He spent over $100 for a set that has to cover his ears completely.

Well yes, but there's a Navy regulation that states we're only allowed to have one earbud in at a time, so that we can still hear what's going on around us. Can't exactly do that with an over-the-ear pair. Not that I always follow this regulation, but it's nice to have headphones that I can follow the regulation with, should I need to. Plus running with high-end over-the-ear headphones would look pretty ridiculous, I'd imagine.

Dedicated MP3 players, it's not.

Yeah andrioids have so many features that its not as dedicated to music. But it does have bluetooth also, so they both are similar.

and @death: yes, it is a lot for a music player, but as me not having a good cell phone, I can use it with wifi to use internet, maps, email, aim/texting etc on the same device. Plus the touch has a video camera feature that sucks miserably on my phone, and video playback on an awesome pixel density screen. So, I guess it all depends.

And yeah I used to have that stupid landscape problem also :P
