{Downieville} Devlog #2: Logo, gui, animations.

Messing around with the HUD.

I've been making great progress on the assets and design of this game. Next blog will be focus on game design and mechanics.

This is awesome, I love the frequent updates on this. The animations look real solid, and I'm a fan of the hud images. How old is the protagonist if he's carrying around a slingshot? Actually I take it back and blame Zelda for associating slingshots with childhood. A real man carries a slingshot if he pleases, 'nuff said.

Holy shit.

My only complaint is in the walking animation. I'm not sure the torso (and head) turns so much during a normal walk cycle. The rest is looking excellent.

Due to your chin shadows and hollowed out eyes, I keep imagining the guy is a wooden puppet.

Yeah the walking animation could use more elbow on the arms… I'd make them more consistent with the running animation (in that one it is obvious where the separate limbs are), but of course with a more walk-style gait to them.

amazing background artwork!

hideously creepy character artwork…

The walking animation is definitely the weakest, especially since it's only 6 frames. Gonna rework that one.

I'm playing with the idea of making everyone a wooden puppet/dummy, but I swear I've seen it done before (other than Pinocchio). Anyone know of any games that do that?

I agree he looks very creepy, which I will need to change. Not really my goal there.

Question: would a devlog a day be too much for you guys? I just want to solidify the ideas floating in my head, but if it gets annoying I'll tone it down.

The hud looks really nice :D. I don't know how easy it will be to use, but then again I don't know much about the game :D. I like the graphics though, the hands look quite nice. One thing that kind of creeps me out is the characters face. It is so creepy lol XD. I'm not sure if he's meant to be, but if he isn't he needs a bit more work, and as CyrusRoberto pointed out, he really looks like a doll, or wooden puppet.

The animations look nice, my favorite one is the run, it looks the most natural :D.

Can't wait to hear more about the game, it looks interesting :)

Edit: Just saw your post above. Its an interesting idea making everyone puppets, but I think that should not look so disturbing. Too be honest I find all puppets creepy, but if you can make it not then it's fine :D.

I don't thing a post a day is a problem, just means I have more reasons to procrastinate :D.

all puppets would be cool, puppets usually have big expressive eyes with pupils and stuff though

and disturbing is good

That's amazing. Great style for the HUD. HUDs are a bitch to get right.

The only thing I don't like is the title, of all things. "Downie" sounds like an offensive term for people with Down's syndrome… *checks Urban Dictionary* …yep.

What are you coding/planning to code this game in?

P.S. I played the recent Legend of Iya demo and it struck me how utterly horrible it was as a game despite the beautiful pixel art (when isolated). What I'm saying is, your project is much more feasible for a game with great graphics, and it looks like the pixel art serves the needs of the game perfectly.

I had the exact thought recently. There is actually a town near where I live that my family visits in the summer named Downieville: http://sierracountychamber.com/sierra-county-downieville.

The game's story ties in with the name as well, specifically the "down" part (not referring to Down's syndrome, rather the opposite of "up").

My brother and I are learning C# / XNA / Monogame at the moment. Whether or not I decide to "hire" a programmer in the future has yet to be decided.

I also played that demo and was completely disappointed in the gameplay. The art is some of the best I've ever seen in a game, but it felt very clunky. I'll definitely put gameplay first; my priority is to make the game fun!
