Oh no :(

Guys, I'm a bit worried…

So I've been working on a multiplayer first person shooter recently. I have the potential to code this all; I know basic multiplayer functions, and basic 3D, and I've been working with gamemaker and particularly with making shooters for a couple of years now.

I'm running into endless problems with the basic engine, but there's another problem. And I need your help: I'm nervous that I'm making JUST another generic first person shooter. I'm nervous that people are going to immediately draw comparisons with Call of Duty and then look down on my work.

So, what features would you like to see? What would make the game more unique?

Also, a bit of background: the game is currently going to be a FPS in a cube-world, not dissimilar to the minecraft world. The arenas will be made by players with a level editor, and then will be destroyed with DT in combat. And players will also be able to customise their character, and particularly, their weaponry. For example, if you chose the generic assualt rifle, you also select a scope for it (e.g. ACOG), a barrel attachment (e.g. muzzle brake), and a magazine (e.g. JSP Extended Magazine).

Thanks for any comments/suggestions!! :)

Hey if you can make a game as good as Call of Duty with game maker then I think that is freaking amazing, only little kids will complain about that.

As far as adding your own spin to it and keeping it away from the generic CoD feel, it sounds like that you have already done it. Having a huge amount of customization in the level sounds super cool especially with the destructible terrain.

Oh, I think I may have given you the wrong impression. Graphically, and probably in terms of gameplay depth, this will be nowhere near the standard of Call of Duty. The team of professional game developers has a slight advantage over me, in that they are a team of professional game developers :P

And also, the DT will be fairly basic. That is, minecraft world sort of thing :S but yeah, if that still sounds good, thanks for your support :D the main thing I'm excited about is the world building and the weapon customisation. On that note, I was thinking of giving the player 3 weapons:

Primary Weapon (that is your assault rifle or SMG)

Equipment (that is your grenades and explosives)

Construction thingo (a tool that allows the player to place down cover and walkways and such)

If you can destroy stuff, why not give the ability to create blocks, too? I dunno :S

Understatement of the century.

Is it possible to make character editing modular? (Like minecrafts skin edits?)

^ that would be pretty neat

Hmmm…. potentially… at the moment, the characters are made of little spheres. I wasn't thinking of going to far with character appearance customisation? I did want to allow emblems, though.

Ignoring the weapons, that is what the current plan for characters is?

maybe some sort of objective could make it different from other shooters. like the different modes of cod or halo or something.

trying to imitate the some of the guns used in those games would make it boring i think.

What sort of game modes did you envisage?

As for weapons, I've tried to make the weapon system different. It varies from CoD in that there are fewer UNIQUE weapons, but more attachments. ATM, there is also a Dial Wield weapon that allows the player to pick any combination of single handed weapons (semi-auto pistol, revolver, machine pistol, sawn-off double-barrel shotgun), which I think is pretty unique :)
