Oh no :(

Guys, I'm a bit worried…

So I've been working on a multiplayer first person shooter recently. I have the potential to code this all; I know basic multiplayer functions, and basic 3D, and I've been working with gamemaker and particularly with making shooters for a couple of years now.

I'm running into endless problems with the basic engine, but there's another problem. And I need your help: I'm nervous that I'm making JUST another generic first person shooter. I'm nervous that people are going to immediately draw comparisons with Call of Duty and then look down on my work.

So, what features would you like to see? What would make the game more unique?

Also, a bit of background: the game is currently going to be a FPS in a cube-world, not dissimilar to the minecraft world. The arenas will be made by players with a level editor, and then will be destroyed with DT in combat. And players will also be able to customise their character, and particularly, their weaponry. For example, if you chose the generic assualt rifle, you also select a scope for it (e.g. ACOG), a barrel attachment (e.g. muzzle brake), and a magazine (e.g. JSP Extended Magazine).

Thanks for any comments/suggestions!! :)

Random thought that came to my mind: stick with that character model, but make legs and arm spheres bigger, and make it possible to shoot them off. And then pick up the gun the character was holding in their (severed) hand. Hilarity should ensue.

It's just a random thought, of course. But I think that, in general, you could somehow use your "different" graphics for different gameplay.

ATM, there is also a Dial Wield weapon that allows the player to pick any combination of single handed weapons (semi-auto pistol, revolver, machine pistol, sawn-off double-barrel shotgun), which I think is pretty unique :)

What are the controls? I'm trying to imagine how dual-wielding a machine gun and a sawn-off shotgun could work…

I remember some game where you could dual wield rocket launchers (while doing flips).

Holy shit that sounds awesome :D:D:D

I'd probably make them regenerate after a few seconds? Like, I'd make health regenerate TO A POINT. And I'm not sure about picking up some guys hand :S hehe

But that is an amazing idea :D thanks!! So like, if you shot off his foot, he wouldn't be able to walk properly. Shoot off both, and he just sits there (perhaps rolls over a bit, too? :P). Lose your head though, and its game over.

As for the dual wielding questions: you won't be able to dual wield ALL weapons. Just special single-handed weapons. A machine gun would be a two handed weapon. And there are no rocket launchers unfortunately - I suspect they would be OP.

One of my mates just suggested that you should still be able run around without a head? At least for a few moments. Without feet - you'd just be stuck in that spot. Without a body - everything would fall off and you'd finally be deemed 'dead'.

Should parts regenerate? Or should there be a button that allows you to just end it if you find yourself lacking in the head department?

if youre lacking a head your screen should be black lol

Well, I thought it'd be funnier if your head fell on the ground, and your camera was at a funny angle. So you can still see through your eyes, and you can still move with your body. Your head just isn't attached, so it doesn't move WITH the body? You'd die after a few seconds, obviously. But yeah.

I was thinking that you could potentially pick body parts up again? So if your body found your head again, you'd reattach it :)
