This is an excellent idea for a thread. I have been meaning to post about some of these artists for awhile.

Tim Sale

Probably my biggest artistic influence growing up. I absolutely love the way he lights things. He also manages to keep his bodies and faces exaggerated while maintaining a grim and somber tone. That's something I always wanted to do myself.

Mike Mignola

More great lighting and unique faces. Another big influence. Mignola gets a lot out of very little detail. I always was impressed by the sense of atmosphere his work provides.

Moebius (Jean Giraud)

Probably one of the most important comic book artists in history. The dude redefined the medium. I picked this piece because it showcases his originality. He is mostly known for his crazy sci-fi stuff, which is great, but I like this kind of stuff more. He was great at designing concepts that are both aesthetically pleasing and hard to describe. This is from a book he did on the Divine Comedy I believe.

Amedeo Modigliani

I like the dead eyes and the mood of his pieces. It speaks to me and inspires me. I don't know exactly why.

Zdzisław Beksiński

Every drug user in the world has probably stared into this guy's paintings before. I think some of his work has become a little overexposed but damn if it isn't incredible. Like Moebius, he creates a whole other world with his art. I like how he combines a rustic feeling with alien elements. Some of his work feels like a classical painting melting into a nightmarish dream.

Arnold Bocklin

I love his landscapes. He usually combines his nature scenes with crumbling architecture, and as a game designer, I adore that kind of stuff. I like to imagine the buildings as entry points to other worlds, maybe even a Beksinski painting.

Might be relatively common, but these are my favorite artists.

Richard Marchand. Modern artist from Canada. His site's been down for a while, but he still has a tumblr page going. http://richardmarchand.tumblr.com

oh man, have you checked out his work with jodorowsky (dune)?

(or seen any of jodorowsky's movies?) highly recommend 'el topo' and 'holy mountain' but really all of them are awesome

I saw the dune stuff before. Those designs continue to inspire me. It's such a shame that movie never happened.

I have not checked out Jodorowsky's movies yet though. I remember seeing talk of him here before (I think maybe cesque mentioned him?) but for whatever I forgot to seek his work out. Seeing those stills though makes me very interested. I'll try to watch them the first chance I get.

The only Jodorowsky movie I've seen is El Topo and I thought that although the visuals were great, the movie was pretty bad. I'm aware that's a pretty popular opinion, so I'm going to reserve judgement of Jodorowsky as a director until I see his other films.

@Acid - I get told that a lot by my fellow art students. Highly controlled and detailed artwork is certainly very attractive to me.

@Spectre - I like the hideousness of the subject matter there. I've found myself drawn to "grotesque" art in recent years.

@Rez - I definitely see those influences in your work. In fact, now that I think about it, your stuff always gave me some David Lynch vibes too.

Ye boi
