I got bored today, so I reviewed one of my favourite games.
Thats right, Its time to look into that hidden gem: DISCWORLD!!
Quote: My Review
The Game (Quoted from Wikipedia):"Discworld (a.k.a. Discworld: The Trouble With Dragons) is a graphic adventure game developed by Teeny Weeny Games and Perfect 10 Productions in mid-1995. It stars Rincewind the Wizard (voiced by Eric Idle) and is set on Terry Pratchett's Discworld. It was released on both floppy disk and CD-ROM, with the CD-ROM version featuring full voice acting for all characters."The Plot (Quoted from Adventure Classic Gaming):"A dragon has come to terrorize Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Discworld. It is up to the wizards of Unseen University to get rid of the dragon. You play Rincewind, a wizard with little, if any, magical ability. As the University’s worst wizard, you are also its most expendable, and so you are chosen to deal with the beast. You first task is to assemble a dragon locator. Once you have found the dragon, you discover that it has been summoned by an evil brotherhood so that you must thwart their plans by traveling into the past. Still more, the dragon has to be dealt with, so your next task is to defeat the dragon and become a hero. Unfortunately, Rincewind is as good at cowardice as he is bad at magic, so that you must lend your wits to Rincewind so he may save the day. "The Graphics:The backgrounds in the game were hand-drawn, and scanned in. As a result, they are beautiful, and enhance the atmosphere. However, the characters and objects in the game are sprited, and fairly cartooony, but somehow, they blend together, to create an overall beauty that immortalises, the game. Even now when I play it, it certainly doesn't seem it was made in 1995. The Gameplay:Despite its easy-to-use interface, and bottomless inventory (aka the chest), Discworld is HARD! Alot of the puzzles are obscure, and some are just bizzarre! You really need to keep an eye out for those useful (and even useless), objects to solve the puzzles in this game. So basically you will NEED a walkthrough. The Atmosphere:The atmosphere is the most appealing aspect of the game. The graphics contribute to alot of it, but most of it is due to the games' usage of humour.Seriously, this game is hilarious! To play this game and keep a straight face is impossible, as there are so many jokes. The variety of jokes is suprisingly large for a videogame. Not only is it clever with its visual humour, such as exaggerating character stereotypes, (such as the heroine in the square), it's also clever with its slapstick, (i.e. everytime someone says the word "monkey", the librarian come out of nowhere and hits them). Even character interactions can be humourous, (I'll let you discover that for yourselves..).Because the game is based on a series of books, it has a lot of injokes, (like the librarian situation I described earlier), but the makers of the game have made the game more accessable to non-readers of the books, as it frequently explains aspect of Discworld to them, (in the form of a guy with a chalkboard). The Point:Play this game! If you don't you will be missing out on an almost perfect experience. The graphics, gameplay, humour, and general atmosphere make this game a must have. I instantly reccommend you get the CD-ROM version, as it has the voices, which add so much to its atmosphere, (as well as the humour!).
I played this game, well at least started playing it. And yes the graphics are amazing (not 3d). But it was too hard so I gave up and forgot that the game is still existing on my hard drive. MY BOTTOMLESS HARD DRIVE :)
Well, get a walkthrough, and play it now!!
(Seriously, this game needs that first playthrough with the walkthrough, else you will get stuck/lost.I thought this will be about Discworld MUD. That is also an amazing game if your into MUD's:
