No more Gayverns, new computer and more...

Posted by Scott_AW on Feb. 19, 2011, 7:46 p.m.

So after much searching, missing out on a nice barebones deal(damn one day only, just before my tax returns…) and countless browsing I settled on a desktop.

I got it at Walmart <.< same place I got my first netbook. Both are Acers.

So I got an Acer with a dual core 3ghz AMD Athlon II X2, 4gb ram, 1tb hd and a pretty nice Nvidia card built in. If you're going to buy any kind of computer at Walmart, it might as well be an Acer.

New computer ment I also had to get my wife her beloved Sims, Sims 3 with the first two expansions(not the stuff ones). I've actually found myself getting into it now that its like a hybrid of Sim City(kinda) and Sims, one big open environment. So they actually made Sims not suck anymore.

Of course this also means I'm using my new system less than I would like. I did get a chance to run full-speced HDR w/ Bloom Oblivion, so tasty, too bad it sucks still…

Did I mention I'm on ModDataBase?

And since I brought up Oblivion, I found this at MODDB

And this for Daggerfall!

And thus, I've changed the font, water fall graphic and such. I'm also redoing how the waterfall effect looks, it'll be much nicer.

I'm just saying. Red is a good color for lava. That's enough of a cliché to throw people off, as you've seen already.

Of course, if you specifically stated in-game what it was, you wouldn't have quite as many issues.

Personally, I'd make it black (or maybe violet).

Listen to this man.

@Rob - I'm not certain how accurate that would be if you don't factor in the motherboard. Also the case is a custom built by acer, has a humongous heatsink and fan setup. That and add in the cost of Win7 Premium…

I'd say 50 for the CPU and 40 for the ram is about right.

Although I think the HD is more in the 70-80 range.

The GPU, probably no more than 50.

The case, fan and motherboard setup is probably more than 100 in total.

Win7 is about 100-150.

Keyboard and mouse, wired, 10

So lowest it would be 50+40+70+100+100+10 = 370

I paid 399. So not too bad.

Maybe I'll make the bad water purplish, thats always a good poison color alternative.

pfft you bought a computer at a real store? :/

Meh. It was instant gratification, and I like Acer, they make nice computers.

I can't vouch for their desktops, but I'll agree with their laptops. (Although they might've gotten better since I had one……)

But at least it looks like you didn't get ripped off that much. I doubt they would've used a higher-end 1tb drive or anything, so I really doubt that $80 though. Especially since they used such a cheap CPU. And about he motherboard, I don't know which one they used, so I just took some random AM2+/AM3/whatever one that I found on newegg's price.

I still bet they cheaped out, and it was $60-70 max.

i remember my last Acer couldn't handle me for very long, and it was a fairly nice triple-core desktop. it served me well when i had it, but compared to how long some of my Compaq and HP computers have held up it was quite short-lived.

Well I've never had a Acer laptop, just the netbook and it has lasted 3 years now without much problems.

As far as Compaq and HP, which are both the same company, I know they both have a bad track record, and so does Dell. That really only leaves me with high-priced Sony, custom built or Lenovo. E-Machines are pretty much the same as Compaq in quality.

Anyway, it hauls ass and gets the job done so I'm happy. I may upgrade the video card though.
