The end of programming for me?

Posted by Tasm on July 9, 2006, 1:12 a.m.

I haven't touched GM for weeks, nor have I wanted to. Aside from being caught up with my new job and Python, I haven't had time for it.

There's a VERY small chance that I'll finish PA2, since well, pretty much no one tried it or commented on it. No point in finishing a game no one likes.

Python has also become a bit of a bore, I'm starting to get into GUI and it's so complex that I'm starting to rethink my career plans… which sucks. I had my mind set on programming, but with all the hang ups, and not being motivated, my chances of actually landing such a job are slim to none.

My second choice was to be a graphic designer, but I pretty much suck at it. The last thing I need is something else to frustrate me during the day.

I guess I'm kinda feeling left out with all the great games others are releasing, and me just having two games here. I guess I'll just face it - game programming is not for me. I better get used to it.

Well, my head hurts, I've got some serious thinking to do, and I've got work tomorrow, so bye.

Sorry, no random song quote today :(

Aye, it happens to the best of us. Motivation is a hard thing to find from time to time. Apathy is the most frustrating emotion because you dont feel motivated at all… I guess in the end all that matters is that you keep trying, even through the crappy parts. Somtimes you have to muster dedication that you thought wasnt there.

Same here man. I haven't coded much at all. I'm completely out of motivation. I want to code something, but I can't.

The only problem I have with coding, is my not finding time to it. The reason that I persist in this seemingly futile quest, is that I know that I have many years ahead to learn. Many of those years will contain a higher patience level than my current one. Programming skill is not complete without patience.

I'm feeling the same way, GM was tons of fun, but now it's just gotten… boring. Obsolete. It's just no fun or good for me anymore. I remember how excited I was when I first had it, cos it introduced me to programming. 3 years later, it's just no good.

Modding Soldat is tons of fun, though. ^-^

I feel that every now and then, but somehow I have always found the motivation again. Right now I'd like to code something, but I just can't get any good ideas.

I have Irrlicht and the DirectX 9 SDK, but I can't use DirX. Irrlicht just needs Visual Studio.

I get that quite a lot. I often stop making a game when I loose the motivation. What basically happends is a start a really good project, do all the hard coding and everything, but then once thats all done I loose the motivation to continue, and so start a side-project, which has the same fate. I haven't finished a proper game since a was learning GML, and now I don't know whether being a programmer is for me or not. Nevertheless, I will finish my current wip, The Vex. The Vex is my best project so far, as I get the motivation to complete it from other people, like my friends at school, my family, and all you guys here. All these people seem to like playing The Vex, so it makes me want to complete it.
