The end of programming for me?

Posted by Tasm on July 9, 2006, 1:12 a.m.

I haven't touched GM for weeks, nor have I wanted to. Aside from being caught up with my new job and Python, I haven't had time for it.

There's a VERY small chance that I'll finish PA2, since well, pretty much no one tried it or commented on it. No point in finishing a game no one likes.

Python has also become a bit of a bore, I'm starting to get into GUI and it's so complex that I'm starting to rethink my career plans… which sucks. I had my mind set on programming, but with all the hang ups, and not being motivated, my chances of actually landing such a job are slim to none.

My second choice was to be a graphic designer, but I pretty much suck at it. The last thing I need is something else to frustrate me during the day.

I guess I'm kinda feeling left out with all the great games others are releasing, and me just having two games here. I guess I'll just face it - game programming is not for me. I better get used to it.

Well, my head hurts, I've got some serious thinking to do, and I've got work tomorrow, so bye.

Sorry, no random song quote today :(

That's why you can't only rely your motivation to push you forward. You need a team. In a team, there are other, very powerful forces called "friendship", "responsibility", "obligation" and "commitment". Unlike the forces that push and propel you forward, these forces keep pulling you when the obstacles seem unsurmountable or when your patience wears thin.

Aye, motivation really is the key to finishing things. Like Joewoof said though, teams can really serve for pulling you through the hard parts.

I LUV making games as a hobby, but I know I will never want to do this for a living as a pro. I know that programming in C++ and Python and the like is a super bore, since GM is the only program that lets me do what I REALLY want: making games. Why the freak do I want to deal with stupid crap like dealing with engines dealing with memory locations and importing graphics and the like when I just want to make a game!?

That, unfortunately, cannot cut it in the real pro game making world. You HAVE to go through the dumb pointless crap to be considered for hire. The college course deals with everything BUT game making. You deal with hexadecimals, memory locations, basic BASIC engine writing and otherwise stuff that barely has anything to do with getting into the REAL meat: making the freaking game!

I like programming, but to a certain point. When it deals with things I can't see, and much less that make either no difference or people just don't appreciate, I get bored, frustrated and whatever negative feelings you can think of. I would NOT want to do this as a real job, since it really has no similarity with making games with GM.

it won't be goodbye from programming yet, python is a language as far as i know… GM does need motivation, and i guess that's why no good games ever get finished…

post editables of all your unfinished games and let other people finish them. or zip c://program files/Game_Maker6 upload it, then post it… if your so sure you wont be using game maker for a very long time.

not the end, just a death for programming, it will respawn. (XD)

I stop and start GM…

But most of the time its things like exams which stop me, but eventually I get back into the scene. Most of the time I do it by looking at an old game and improving it, like fixing bugs ect, and this always gets my brains whirring again.

But seriously don't worry about Gm, if you really don't have time for it then let it fade away in your memory than worry about it…

Don't worry about people who've made better games..

I've been using GM for 2 years and only three of my games wre finished (that was when I was a noob, and my username was Coxo2004), since then I've never finished a game…
