The scariest game making competition since Scary Four Digits 2010

Competition Results

UPDATE Sunday the 30th of October 2011, 13:55pm GMT

The competition is officially over. You can still submit over Sunday (today), but please make this as soon as possible.

UPDATE Thursday the 27th of October 2011, 13:41pm GMT

I've decided to give everyone a full Saturday to work on their games. The submission deadline is now Sunday the 30th of October 2011, 12:00 noon GMT. You should aim to submit your entire game by this time. Please see "How To Submit Your Game".

This should give you just shy of 72 hours, as of now.

If you're a little late in submitting (ie a few hours), please don't freak out or anything, it's fine, just submit as soon as possible.

You won't get to play the games until Monday the 31st of October 2011, 0:00am GMT.

UPDATE Friday the 7th of October 2011, 0:00am GMT

The competition is now underway!

You can now start making your game.

Entering is officially closed, but if you're an active 64digits member or if you have a really good excuse for why you didn't enter earlier, feel free to try and convince me. =)

AND REMEMBER, you must submit your final game before Sunday the 30th of October 2011, 0:00am GMT, give or take a few hours for those confused by timezones and for other unfortunate souls.

On your marks!

RULES:

1. The aim of the competition is to develop entirely your own game within the time limit (7th Oct - 30th Oct). You will have to keep up to date with my blog posts to find out how and when to submit your final game.

2. You MUST have stated you are going to enter before the 7th of October 2011 (read further down for details).

3. You MUST submit your final game before the 30th of October 2011 (further details to come).

4. You MUST NOT include anything in the game that you don't have full permission to use.

5. You must not include anything in the game which has been in a game you have already released on the Internet - within reason and common sense. This rule is only valid until the 31st of October 2011 (0:00 GMT) - you can then share your final game entry elsewhere and do whatever you want with it.

N.B. You shouldn't release your final game before the 31st Oct because of this rule.

N.B. You can still post screenshots and videos anywhere you like - just not the game. If you want to send demos to each other, do it privately!

6. Your final game MUST have Halloween/horror/terror themed elements or references.

7. There are no programming language/game engine restrictions except that the game MUST run on Windows 7.

8. Don't be a cheater.

9. ONE entry per person.

10. You MUST be at least 15 years old to take part… the competition entries are likely to involve mature content.

11. I reserve the right to update or otherwise change the rules and to disqualify any entrant who breaks the rules.

PRIZES:

OK, for those expecting to win $1000 - which toads are you licking? I'm not trying to sell you anything. I gain nothing if you take part (in fact, keep reading, I lose a buck). I won't own anything you make, it's yours. HUNDREDS of people take part in the most famous game comp, Ludum Dare - they don't offer anything at all except the fun of taking part. If you want prizes, give as you wish to receive. If you're in it for the money, you don't deserve anything anyway.

TRICK-OR-TREAT (EVERYONE)

Trick-or-treating is a tradition which promotes greediness, hostility and obese children.

To protest and as a companion to the prizes above, for every successful entrant* I will donate $0.50 $1.00 to UNICEF (up to an undisclosed maximum).

Less candy for those little shits knocking on the door and more food and medicine for the dying.

Now you have no excuse - do it for the children, you cold, heartless bastard.

DO YOU LUDUM-DARE** COMPETE?

*A 'successful entrant' is defined as an entrant who submits a legitimate game within the time limit, gets at least one vote in the preliminary judging and is someone who I determine has actually bothered to make a decent game.

** :3

LIST OF ENTRANTS:

p.s. If you want to discuss the competition with other competitors on one of those IRC doohickies for some strange reason, use the 64digits one. I'm sure they'll not mind.

@death I predicted this from the start. Drop out rates are always this high, the difference is I explicitly made people state their intent from the start.

@ Gift of Death:

to be honest, i made the bulk of my game in like 5 days… lol xD

i wasted a lot of time not really doing anything or just working on a few tiles per day. i pretty much worked a lot in the first week, and a lot in the last couple days. in the middle, i did nothing. (though that's mostly because i have work and college which consume most of my life)

my point is, a week could have been enough for something =P

sorry to hear about your illness though, i had that 4 years ago and it sucked ass… (not literally)

Cesque 13 years ago

Fuck that, it's still our best competition thus far. Bear in mind that the number of actual successful participants may be higher than actual successful entries because of more than one person working on a game (programming/music pairs :)).

Gift of Death 13 years ago

@death

Well, I had an awesome plan to work on. Then I got ill and lost that 2 weeks and I trashed my plan beign too big to get even properly playable with real content within a week would've been impossible for one person. Then I simply couldn't think of anything small and original enough.

But I'll start working on that original plan of mine sooner or later now. :P

But yeah, I'm feeling pretty bad for not making anything. :<

Deza 13 years ago

Ready to submit ours come sunday. Just ironing out the bugs.

Castypher 13 years ago

I take it back, there are too many things to do in order to prepare it for even a demo. Tell you what then, I'll just continue work on it, and if anyone is interested in playing it even after the competition, I'll release it later.

Otherwise it'll just go into my pile of games I'll periodically look at but never finish. I'm sure I could reuse a few things though.

colseed 13 years ago

Same as Kilin I think….we should have a post-Halloween comp release date or something lol
I promise to maek an actual game this time :3
I like the sound of that. Anything that wasn't finished in time for the competition gets released in bulk. Each game would probably get more attention than if we'd released them individually. There are a lot of people whose games I'd have liked to see.

BP Scraps 13 years ago

Hey Toast, would 11 PM GMT be too late? Exactly what kind of grace period are you willing to give here?
