1ST JULY UPDATE!

Seeing as you have approximately one month to go, it's time to open submission and announce the judges.

Remember, the current deadline is Thursday the 2nd of August 2012, at 0:00am GMT+1 although it may be extended by a few days, depending on if I can get internet access while on vacation.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR GAME:

Seeing as 64d game submission is still down we're going to have to do this manually.

Submit your game at any time between now and before the 2nd of August.

SteveEdit: Please remember to upload a 210x110 preview image for your submission, otherwise, your game will NOT show up on the front page of the site, and will be unseen by most people. The amount of people that have forgotten to do this is staggering, and I'm not going to waste any more time making preview images for you.

You can do this by firstly submitting your game to 64digits, and then secondly sending a private message to me under the subject "RPG4D Entry" using the Send Message icon below. The contents of the message should follow the submission template described below.

YOU MUST FOLLOW THE TEMPLATE GIVEN BELOW OR YOUR GAME WILL NOT BE ENTERED. I WILL REPLY TO YOUR MESSAGE EITHER CONFIRMING OR DENYING ENTRY.

ENTRY SUBMISSION TEMPLATE:

You MUST follow this template when submitting your game. Those fields coloured red MUST be included.

GAME NAME:

The full name of the game as you want it written in subsequent posts.

USERNAME:

The actual 64digits.com username/s of the creator/s of the game who entered the competition, as listed below in the list of entrants.

CREATORS NAME:

The names of the creators of the game as you want them written in subsequent posts. If this isn't filled in, your 64digits usernames will be used.

64DIGITS PAGE LINK:

Provide the url of your game's page on 64digits.

MIRRORS:

Provide additional urls to your game here if you like, in case the first goes down or for different systems. If you wish to provide a version of the game for additional operating systems, please label this clearly.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Game runs on java. Includes extreme violence.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

You must include the full credits for your game in a text file called "credits" or "readme" archived with your game. You must credit everything that you or your collaborators did not make yourself, and state who or where you got it from and how you received full permission. You can also state the roles you and your collaborators played in the creation of the game.

It's also sensible to ensure you include the controls and any additional notes on the game in an attached document.

THE VOTING SYSTEM:

When the games are listed in August, there will be a public round of nominations. Everyone who submitted a game MUST take part in the voting in order to qualify, but other 64digits members can also vote if they wish. After that, the top 10 games will be announced and the judging panel will decide who the five winners are.

THE JUDGES:

The judges were all chosen by the 64digits community - the people who were most requested were the ones who I asked to judge.

Looking at the list, I don't know how it could have worked out better. A personal thank you to those who agreed to take part, as I know you're extremely busy people.

RULES:

1. The aim of the competition is to develop entirely your own game within the time limit (1st May - 1st August). You MUST submit your final game before the 2nd of August 2012. You will have to keep up to date with my blog posts to find out how to submit your final game.

2. You MUST have stated you are going to enter before the 1st of May 20th of May 2012.

3. You MUST NOT include anything in the game that you don't have full permission to use or without good reason use significant amounts of game content that you or somebody else had already made prior to the competition.

4. Your final game MUST have "RPG elements", specifically relating to the gameplay (eg anything such as experience points, inventories, quests, turn-based combat, etc. Fantasy themes and long storylines are common in RPGs, but not related to the gameplay). "RPG" in the context of this competition is defined here.

5. There are no programming language/game engine restrictions except that the game MUST run on Windows 7. Your game shouldn't require additional software installation (unless you really need to do so).

6. Don't be a cheater.

7. ONE entry per person, maximum team of FOUR.

8. Your game MUST NOT be libelous, harmful, threatening, harassing, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, sexually explicit, pornographic, obscene, defamatory or objectionable, in my opinion.

9. I reserve the right to update or otherwise change the rules and to disqualify any entrant who breaks the rules.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

-Am I allowed to publish demos of my competition entry before the deadline?

Yes.

-Am I free to do whatever the heck I like with my game after the competition is over?

Yes.

-Is it ok if my entry into the competition is shareware?

The game you enter into the competition must be freely available to everyone from the time of your submission until the winners are announced. You can do what you like with your game, but the freely available part is what you will be judged on.

-Can I use a game engine made before the competition started?

Yes.

-When you say "significant amounts of game content", how much is "significant"?

So long as you comfortably believe that you made your game without stealing or cheating, by all means enter.

-But how do I know if I've stolen or cheated?

The point of the competition is to develop your own game - so long as your own contributions to the game content outweigh or otherwise justify the amount of game content you took from elsewhere, you're good.

-What is "game content"?

Anything which makes your RPG different to every other RPG. This includes but is not limited to art, music, gameplay, story and in some cases code.

-How is the competition going to be judged?

There will be a nomination round involving a public vote to find the top 10 games. The top 10 will then be judged to find the winners, by the judges.

-Has my game got to have all those RPG elements you listed in the rules?

No, they were EXAMPLES of RPG elements. You only need at least one RPG element in your game, and that element can be whatever you can think of.

-Can I change my team?

Yes, you can change your team roster at any point during the competition.

Well. Here's what happened to my entry:

At first, it was essentially a loz clone, but with a larger, somewhat more open world.

That failed because ghost left a month ago, so it got scrapped.

Then came a story driven game where everything you did had consequences.

Failed because I couldn't figure combat out.

Then came another loz clone, but this one was based off of pong. You spun paddles around to attack or deflect shots.

Failed because I apparently suck at enemy AI.

So, I have absoloutley nothing to enter right now. IF (and only if) I manage to finish a playable demo of the turn based rpg I've been working on lately will I be able to submit something. And I doubt that's gonna happen.

My platform RPG will get finished in time if I can just throw the rest of the levels together, add in the bosses and tack on some pointless dialogue to make the game feel longer than it actually is.

And if my motivation to work on this thing is actually in the positives.
