Trench Warfare

Studying WWI in Social Studies gave me an idea for a new game; Trench Warfare.

I'm aiming for a simple yet strategic style of gameplay, more arcadey than anything else. Basically the screen consists of no-man's land, bordered on both sides by, what else, trenches. You'll fight as either the Central Powers or the Allies, and give your troops orders. Some things I have in the planning:

- Fighting Intensity. Basically a meter you can change, which tells your troops how hard to fight (pretty much how often to shoot). The higher it is, the more ammunition your troops use up.

- Support. Every set period of time (will be adjustable), you'll be able to call for one type of support: Ammunition or Reinforcements. Ammunition will give more.. ammunition (once it's used up, you're a sitting duck), and reinforcements give you five or so more troops.

- Artillery Strikes. You'll start with a set amount of these (adjustable aswell), that you can use over the course of the battle. They can only be launched in no-man's land.

- Charging. The only way to win a battle. Press this and all you troops, save for 3, will run out toward the enemy's trench. While running, accuracy is lowered. Soldiers are also vulnerable to artillery strikes, barbed wire, and enemy fire.

Famous Battles. I'm still not sure about this one, but you may fight in famous WWI battles.

That's all I have for now. Does anyone else have any more ideas?

DesertFox would make a great boss!

I'm speaking of Erwin Rommel, of course. The famous strategist who fought in the Afrika Wars during WWII. He did not share the Nazi ideals, and turned down the offer of being in charge of Hitler's private regiment of bodyguards.

Heh, were going over WW1 in our shcool too… Add stuff into the game like mustard gas, and that battle at that forest. (cant think of name)

Be able to dig new trenches.

Hitler was in WW2 you dumbass.

Sounds like it could be good fun. (lol, especially the idea of Hitler runing across no-man's land)

Though I don't know how you could incorporate famous battles if it's just a side-on type thing (sorry, if it's not, just that's the only way i can picture it) other than by just changing the background/type of troops.

For ideas:

1) Maybe allow artillery barrages on trenches, but have a command to order your troops into foxholes/bunkers etc? Would be good for cover as moving troops across no man's land.

2) Mines in no-man's land?

3) Smoke/hand grenades?

4) Allow medics from each side to collect casualties from no-man's land after charges? (would also be a good way of clearing too many bodies on screen?)

5) I believe (though it may have been ww2) that they sometimes mined under enemy trenches and blew them up?

6) Perhaps have some units (engineers?) able to cut/place barbed wire/clear mines?

Sorry if any/all of those are stupid, just trying to give you some ideas mate :)

Great idea for a game though.

Nice. :) How about engineers that can destroy barbed wire? AND THERE ARE NO MUSSOLINI AND HITLER IN WWI

Hitler got injured real fast. And he was no boss. Maybe give soldiers names and call one hitler. :)

Mustard gas? Screw that, I'm worried about ketchup gas.
