Gonna join the RPG comp and need an engine? I has one.

Hiya, I'm Yal, long-time Game Maker user with big ego and awesome output. Some of you might know me as a Local Moderator over at the Game Maker Community.

You might have heard about the 64 Digits RPG competition? If not, read this:

http://www.64digits.com/users_php/index.php?userid=Toast&cmd=comments&id=272934&

You gotta join, because the more the merrier!

If you need an engine to work with, or to learn from, I'm working on one. (It's unfinished but should give you a pointer about where to start). Feel free to use it… as long as you don't make a better game than I'm gonna do. =P

The engine is VERY bare of content, so you shouldn't break the rules of the competition by using it since you gotta make oodles of stuff yourself. Oh, and it's not complete either and I'm not gonna work on it 'til after the competition. Good luck! ^__^

Good. On the train home a few hours after posting this I realized it might have been a bad idea sharing…

Just in case, I promise I won't be using this engine for my entry in the competition, and I promise I won't update this engine significantly until the deadline has appeared.

If this engine is found rule-breaking at some later point, just alert me an I'll immediately remove the blog post.

There are no programming language/game engine restrictions except that the game MUST run on Windows 7. Your game shouldn't require additional software installation (unless you really need to do so).

I don't see how this breaks the rule. You still have to tailor it to your needs and make a game out of it.

Same reason if you used RPG Maker - all your tools are there ready for you, you still need to craft a game using it.

Anyway. I'll be creating my own engine and my goal is to beat you, Yal. :P Kudos to you for sharing nonetheless, and don't regret it!

I think it is a bit of a grayzone… I sort of regret posting it now… but then again, I agree with you. The engine won't make a good game without lots of effort from whoever uses it, and in the end the effort is what should count.

But as I've stated before, if anyone in charge of the competition (Toast in particular) disagrees I'll take away the blog post as soon as I've gotten notified.

This is pretty cool.

In all honesty, my first reaction when seeing this was that this was probably cheating. But it's true that it's comparable to using RPG Maker, which is legal. All in all, I don't see too many issues with using this, though it does put the other GM users starting from scratch at a disadvantage. But then again, using GM puts C# programmers at a disadvantage, which puts C++ programmers as a disadvantage. We chose our own tools, so it's really out fault there.

Still, I'm going to say to this what I said to RPG Maker. Anyone can use it, but if they don't know how to use it, it'll severely limit their capabilities.

Although I guess it doesn't take much work for someone to Google a Ruby script.

I agree with Toast.

I'm going to allow it only because people are allowed to use things such as RPG maker, which (I think) has it's own "engine" quite like this. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Whether the engine is part of the software or part of the game, it really will be dependent on how the person delivers. You chose your own tools, like Kilin said.

So I would say that you can use it because the main focus is to develop the RPG, not the RPG engine.
