Shattered Whirr

Anyone remember my competition game, Shattered World? I've recently made a spin-off game titled Shattered Whirr for the 9th GMC Jam, and unlike previous jams, I've actually spent some time refining it. It's not DONE yet, but I'm working on it. The current demo has 4 of 5 stages complete. If you haven't played Shattered World, don't worry: there will be no spoilers whatsoever.

Basically, it's a Gradius-style shooter game where you go to the right automatically, avoiding the terrain. You can either spam enemies with incredibly weak shots or take the time to charge up powerful special attacks. Like this one.

And it has co-op mode as well! (Gamepad required). Basically, you use one button to shoot to the left and another to shoot to the right (right now it's Z and X for keyboard and button 1 and 2 for a gamepad, customized controls coming soon), and hold down either to charge up power. I've just submitted it to the 64D database, but if you don't want to wait, here's a download link:

Oh, someone actually liked the game! ^____^

I've put a lot of work in the boss battles - the boss takes like 5-6 times longer to make than the stage. The 5th boss will hopefully be even better than the 4th boss, it's going to move around the room by shooting grapple hooks on the walls.

There's lots of things to rebalance before the game is really "complete", but I actually increased the combo time to make it easier to get extra lives (most feedback I get is that the game is too hard). Maybe I should make the time difficulty-dependent, since on harder difficulties there's more enemies anyway. Or increase the Extend score all the time so you need more than 50 000 points for the second extra life and so on.

Problems with the Snow Pokies? I've always seen them as a hit-n-run obstacle rather than an enemy: you shoot them to pass, then speed thru before they regenerate and block the way again.

"Yal" was already taken, I think. I made an account here YEARS ago, stopped using it, and forgot my login details. Or maybe it was just the character count.

Complaints about the new shoot mode? Well, well… I'd better go start working with the options screen.

LAN co-op… in Game Maker? Yeah, dream on. =P

Well, doesn't have to be LAN, that's just the easiest. 39DLL is a powerful tool, you know. Actually, I'm currently using it for a shmup and I'll tell you it's entirely possible.

Isn't 39dll totally deprecated?

Castypher 11 years, 9 months ago

Ooh, is there a replacement I'm unaware of? I'd love to have something that's either easier or more efficient.

It's entirely possible that I have heard wrong, I just remember some discussion about it here.

This looks like so much fun. I'm definitely going to have to play it once I get home.

39DLL doesn't work with GM'81 (which is what I'm currently using). On the good side, YYG is rewriting the multiplayer functionality, the Game Maker Blog released a list of function names recently.

How? I'm currently using it with 8.1 and I've had no issues whatsoever.

It's about goddamn time. That's great news. Too bad it's GMS only. They've been neglecting 8.1 for quite some time now.

Also, on a side note, your dragon character's portrait makes him look like a piece of cardboard. Most of the shading is good except around the edges of the snout in particular. That plus the way the scales don't round with the contour says he has no volume to his face.

This was actually a comment I meant to make since Shattered World. But hey, if he's meant to be a paper dinosaur, then kudos to you.

It works with '81? Hmm… must've mixed it up with the ogre dll.

Okay, gotta redraw Sarhya's portrait, I guess? Well, I'm not 100% satisfied with it myself anway so I guess I can - it was made early in SW days, with the RPG4D deadline in mind.
