Graphics over Gameplay

Hey guyses,

I wanted to ask:what's more important to you - graphics or gameplay? Would you sacrifice 3D graphics for a pixellated 2D game which has great gameplay, such as Sid Meier's Colonization?

I guess many gaming industries today concentrate on making great graphics, but not on actual gameplay, so almost ALL games suck these days… I remember the good 'ol days, when there was nothing more but a MS-DOS screen displaying such classics as UFO and

Warlords I
… Nostalgic :]

Then there are roguelikes. You either hate them or love them. I'm on the latter side. Nothing beats the feeling of little "@"s beating the crap out of little "W"s. The fun thing is, the more 'sucky' the graphics, the more your imagination takes place and creates your own image of the thing.

What is your opinion?

Cheers,

aEon

Super Mario World is one the most perfect games ever!

So yeah I'm a bit of both….

(balance is necessary…)

But if I had to choose gameplay would win,

because I love freakin' gauntlet!

(And I really want a remake!!)

I'd rather have great gameplay over great graphics, which is why I use it as a way to find out a real gamer from a wannabe gamer. If they diss the wii for "having bad graphics", then I know they're not real gamers.

It's more of a balance, like RetroVortex said, you wouldn't want to see a movie where the graphics are OMFG AWESOME but there's no plotline, but on the other hand, you don't want to see a movie that has a brilliant plot but cardboard scenery. Both will make you not want to continue watching, as the first is boring to watch while the second is painful to watch.

This has given me a brilliant idea.

*Goes to get cardboard boxes*

Now if only I had a video camera….

I hate the whole Graphics vs. Gameplay debate because it seems so ill-defined. A better debate is what makes good graphics. There's no doubt that graphics add atmosphere and that it is an important part of a game for it to look good. The point is that it doesn't take a billion polygons to achieve that.

Good graphics is usually defined as a billion polygons, an accurate lighting engine, a ton of shadows, miniscule detail that is usually ignored but noticed when you watch on an HDTV, etc.

Here's how it works.

Graphics attract the players. Gameplay keeps them there. Gameplay rules over graphics, which is why I like the Wii.

How about you try defining gameplay, as the term is used pretty loosely.

A lot of people see it as "What makes the game fun to play", which of course will triumph over graphics. Also, because this is a Gamemaker blog, good graphics aren't something seen around here often.

From an advertiser's POV, I don't give a shit about gameplay, as long as the game looks good.

But I really don't think like that.

I don't like Rogue-likes that stick to the ASCI graphical interface. Better graphics exist that are just as easy to use, so use them. Diablo are strictly Rogue-likes and look at those graphics and gameplay? Gorgeous! Stop living in the past!

Juju, bear in mind the limited/no budget of most roguelikes. But you're right in that sticking to ASCII by "principle" is dumb, and as I said, I myself prefer tiled graphics.
