Pop-Up problems

Posted by abacus on Aug. 24, 2008, 5:33 p.m.

So, I have been having some problems with pop-ups in FF3. I have never had pop-up problems before, I think this may have started form me attempting to pirate a copy of Mix Meister, which may have turned out to be a virus (every time it ran it said 'unexpected error' and closed).

I've tried everything normal, ran a virus/spyware scan with Avast and SuperAntiSpyware, which came up with some things but did not fix the problem.

So here is my problem: A process called WLLoginProxy.exe opens up when a pop-up opens up. I was wondering if it was possible to block this process from opening, because I think it's what is causing the problem. When I end the process form the Task Manager, the pop-ups stop. The process only opens when I open FF3 (I've tried re-installing, no dice)

Just wondering if anyone knew how to automatically close the process once it opens up, without me having to go into task manager.

Have you tried deleting it, perhaps?

I don't know of anything to do that, but good luck fixing it.

Ok, first I'd suggest making sure all your antivirus and antispyware is up-to-date. If you do not have antivirus, install AVG. I would also recommend that you add Spybot Search & Destroy to your antispyware tools.

Here is how you can prevent that thing from running, but it only works in XP Pro.

Ok, Google and download DTaskmanager. Run it (no install needed) and it will give you what looks like a souped-up task manager. Right-click the rouge process and select "Find Target File". Note the location.

Launch a run box and input the following with no quotes:

%SystemRoot%\system32\secpol.msc /s

Go under Software Restriction Policies > Additional Rules. Right-click and select New Hash rule, and then use that file location. Would type more, but I g2g.

Thanks guys, but I deleted the file and there are still pop-ups (only without the WLLoginProxy.exe opening as well)

Have you installed Spybot?

Tools > Options > Advanced > Updates

Set "When updates to Firefox are found:" to "Ask me what I want to do".

Uninstall FF3.

Install FF2.

Do not update.

Glad I could help. ^_^

Make sure to turn on signature verification if you do (and refresh after turning it on).
