Doing It Wrong

Guys, I have a confession to make. Last night, I attempted to bone an old model. ……… I'm talking about 3d models you pervert! /facetious

So, the last time I rigged a model was ages ago, and in anim8or. Bless you if you remember that old proggy, but I digress. I've grown to prefer Wings3d for modelling, but if you've ever used Wings you know that's about the extent of it's functionality: modeling and texturing. So I've always needed a bigger tool but luckily Blender is there to fill the gaps. Though if you've ever used Blender you know it's not exactly a cakewalk. I don't know about you, but for me it's always been "that tool" that I'm eager to learn but every time I start doing something with it I get in way over my head and just end up frustrated. Well, I decided to change that by diving into it head first, as I have before, only this time I decided to tackle rigging. Which brings me back to last night, I loaded up an old model of mine and attempted to bone it bring it to life.

It went okay:

I was actually kinda surprised at how easy it was, and spent some time posing my muñeca happily:

But I soon realized it was not all sunshine and buttercups. I was having a suspicious amount of trouble manipulating some of the limbs, which ultimately led me to conclude that I was Doing It Wrong™. So today I decided to embark on a video tutorial on how to set up a moderate armature in blender. And let me tell you, following along a video tutorial is probably the best way to learn Blender, oh by a longshot. Especially when the tutor enables a Blender addon that shows all his keypresses (very convenient!). But yeah, watching the tutorial verified that I was indeed Doing It Wrong™, and the proper way to use inverse kinematics is not to use Blenders Auto IK, but in fact to add IK constraints manually. And thus I was able to complete the tutorial with a much more practical rig:

I then started experimenting with animation:

Not perfect, but it's a start. Now at least I have something to practice animation with while I continue to work on my modeling/texturing skills. Oh the adventures to be had!

Damn, you boned that model good.

It's starting to look like it could be a character in a low-budget television advertisement.

EDIT: Oh, you didn't make that thing. I can blame my future nightmares on someone else.

ahahahahaha…. AHAHAHAHA. No really, this made me crack up, I'm sorry :c

As for your later animation work- pretty damn awesome. I myself started with Anim8or, that was my first 3D program. From there I went to Blender, then to Wings3D, then back to Blender, then I got Zbrush, Google Sketchup, and 3Ds MAX 2010, and haven't looked back since. And I've been modeling since 2009, but I have never been able to animate, or even get to your point.

I've messed around with the IK stuff in MAX using the provided bipeds, and that shit's just confusing.

Good stuff, hopefully you whip up some more soon? I'm interested to see where you get with this in time.

a flipping table should be added to the first pic.

and for the last one there should be a caption at the bottom saying, "Haters Gonna Hate"

At first I was like "what are flipping tables? sounds like some 3d concept I've never heard of…" then I googled and was like:

( ╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Also lol, this blog title started out as "Gangster swagger" xD
