platform exploration games

they're not exactly new ideas, but platform exploration/adventure games are quickly becoming my favorite genre. funny thing is i'm not a fan of the originals, like metroid or castlevania. what i'm really liking the recent influx of more abstract games of the genre, like seiklus, bland, untitled, albero and the great blue emblem, the wasteland, smallness, hazed, caveman, painajainen, random land, etc. there's really something about them that makes them totally attractive to me.

this morning i was real bored, and i found a piece of artwork by cdi called teeny tiny pixel men. i figured i'd make a few animations of the character in game maker, just to see how it looked. a few animations eventually turned into this:

i really like the way that ended up coming out. the only thing is, i'm having trouble deciding which way i want to take the game. tradition says no lives, no healthbar, just plain old exploring and puzzle-solving fun. i put in the health/life system and a cave story-esque weapons system just in case i needed them, but so far my game is mostly exploring, so i wanted to ask you guys' opinions. should i make this into a hybrid explorer/shooter, or stick to tradition and keep it an explorer/puzzler?

i'm really enjoying myself making this, as the game kind of puts itself together. when i release it, it's definitely going to be in editable form, so that everyone can see how it works.

Wow, that looks really cool. I've always wanted to make a game like that.

It could be intresting to be untraditional. It might work, won't know unless you try, right?

I'm also working on a platform expoler. Mines pretty close to being finished and its pretty lame, oh well! I tried!

Their is nothing like a good platform exploring game.

I'm a fan of platform exploration games as well. If you want to make a fun one, you'll have to use exceptional graphics (a must), and incorporate an element that other games of the same genre don't include. I thought that Painajainen did this nicely.

yeah, i agree. painajainen was an excellent game, even though most people immediately knocked it as a seiklus ripoff. i still need to find that 'hook' for this game though, all i have is a color set and a movement engine that i like

I remember Albero! I never finished it, but I got right near the end. Great game, kept me playing for ages.
