|bd| Homeschool Woes

Posted by bendodge on Aug. 2, 2007, 1:13 a.m.

Alas, school is starting soon, and I have more work this year than ever before. If you think homeschooling is easy, think again. I have to do English, Algebra 2, Chemistry, Consumer Math, Bible, History and Spanish. I strongly suspect my programming life is over for a good while.

Several people (Shork and Firebee in particular), have been trying using controversial blogs to boost their numbers, and I admit that I did participate for a while. However, I hope everyone will come to their senses and let such tactics fail.

In the meantime, we are re-carpeting and painting the school room. It is has the highest traffic of any room in the house, and the cheap carpet that came with our house wore out in short order.

I am attempting to turn this PC into a part-time DVR so I can immediately rewind my live satellite classes, but since the school room is torn up I am operating out of the garage. This wouldn't be a problem except that my wireless adapter doesn't have Ubuntu drivers, so I can't get a connection in Linux, which I need to download MythTV and other misc packages. I guess I have to do it in Windows and install them manually, but I am loath to do so.

Well, that's all for now; back to painting (oh joy…)

shadowstrike32: You took the words out of my mouth. Seriously, a whole subject on the bible?

Indeed Bible. Do you know (without looking it up) who wrote Numbers? Or which prophet was commanded to dig a hole in the wall of the city and escape through it?

At least I don't have to worry about getting a lame teacher; my satellite teachers have very large classes (sometimes over a hundred), so they have to be good to get hired.

My school is a compelling environment, or rather, my dad compels our environment. [:P]

I actually have seen some of my teachers, because I went to the University for a science camp and got to meet some of them in person. And since the classes are live, I can email questions. But students at LINK schools can actually talk to the teachers real-time. (I suspect BJU is planning to add the ability for home users to do that over broadband.)

I'm not doubting that you COULD fill a hole subject on the bible, what I'm doubting is its usefulness, relevance, and overall credibility (It's a bit hard to pin-point the exact writiers, and most widely held beliefs, eg Moses writing most of the old testament, are based on what fits into the Christian religion). That and I don't find the bible to be a terribly interesting book. But that's just me.

Wouldn't the Bible class just be a part of history with religious beliefs and commands?

I start school in 25 days and my summer has been tiring because I work at Taco Bell and get 30-40+ hours a week. Last week about 41, this week a plan of 38 hours. (After 40 hours you get over time which is time and a half (make 7 an hour so get 10.50 for the overtime hours.)

I did very well in Geometry, a had a real cool teacher, but he's going back to college to get his master's degree or something. We had a smart board (one of those "marker board type" things that projects the computer screen onto it and you can use special computer "pens" to write the board and you can hit file and edit or click links and stuff, it was sweet.

I think I am saying too much, but I am a good typer and a fast one.

I liked in the beginning of the bible wear they talk about the pharaoh, even though the pharaoh and some of the people (or all) of Egypt were evil. :( … WHY DID THE PHARAOH HAVE TO BE EVIL?

The Bible has lots of historical and cultural value, but most importantly, I believe it.

My dad teaches in a public school, and he's getting a smart board this year. They are really, really cool.

Pharaoh was the villain, plain and simple. [:P] (FYI, the chariot wrecks are believed to be found at the bottom of the Red Sea, but the Egyptian govt. won't let anybody remove them.)

Luda: I hate how Conservative Christians want to keep their kids from bad things, so they homeschool them and smother them with bad things of their own.

Luda:It's like inbreeding.

Me: Except they're even more retarded.

Sorry. XD

Hehe.

That's a nice little pat theory, but it just doesn't pan out in real life.

For some reason, the title makes me think of saying "Subterranean Homeschooled Blues"… I can't explain it, really, but that's what I'm getting. [:P]

The pharaoh I made up isn't as nearly as evil as the one at the end of Genesis and the beginning of Numbers.
