3rd party assets?

Curious what everyone's opinion is of using Unity Asset Store purchases in your S4D game? I think common elements like NGUI are a no-brainer, but just wondering what the general consensus is regarding 3rd party assets overall?

For example, I'd rather focus on the gameplay / programming side of the project instead of spending the whole time building assets, and I do have a fairly healthy library of licensed assets already that would potentially be suitable…

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are around these…

Not illegal, just appears as lazy.

5. All game assets must be original and never before used in a previously released project. This does not apply to tools, engines, etc. Participants must have permission to use any content that is not their own.
I'm pretty sure that means you would be arrested, Ferret.

Damn you coppers!

lol thanx, that's sort of what I figured. It's a bit of a fine line with Unity (between 'tool' and 'asset'), but will run with what feels right and build the rest.

Cheers

It all depends on what the third party assets are. An outside function/.dll for instance might be okay assuming it's functions that are otherwise impossible with the program. However, using open source art would not be okay. Granted, I think there is an exception somewhere regarding music, and if there isn't I feel there should be. Making music isn't something most people can do. Not in the sense of artistic quality, just in the sense that they can't play an instrument, period.

All content must be original and never before used in a previously released project, which includes graphics and music. Purchasing pre-made assets goes against this rule if they've been used in other projects before, but if they were created specifically for the game itself and you purchased them (or if they've never been used, I suppose), it would be fine.

I can see that it must be legal to use, but I find it odd that music cant be open-source. Maybe I'm over thinking the difficulty of music making, but how exactly are people supposed to find or obtain music for the comp? Are you encouraging the creation of teams?

Usually, in a jam, it's part of the fun to make some kind of music yourself. :)
