Designer's Block :P

Posted by glory_in_death on May 23, 2006, 9:23 p.m.

ugh, all my creativity has gone completely out the window. I have been thinking for some time now and i just can't come up with any ideas or anything for a game. The most I've got is a name..2 actually: The Devil's Rejects (not based off the movie), and Hell's Toys. So, I just thought I'd ask what you guys would like to see in a game that would fit with the names I just listed.

Hells toys. An RTS. Build custom robots and kill others online

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Be eclectic. Draw upon your experiences for inspiration. Some of the greatest works of art reflects your unique perception of your life and the world around you. Also draw upon entertainment media for inspiration, be it literature, art, music in whatever forms you like best. Music often brings out some of the best ideas.

  • Buy some notebooks, very good pens and write down your ideas. Creative ideas are often difficult to memorize and will often float away the moment you start thinking about something else. Also be sure to NOT be selective - write down whatever you come up with. You can choose later.

  • Brainstorm. It's a time-tested technique that never fails. Make a massive list of whatever ideas you can come up from the top of your head (again, just write them down, don't judge them - doing so ruins the creative flow). After a while, cross out the ideas you don't like and keep the ones you do.

  • Use the following techniques to increase the release of the neurotransmitter responsible for creative thought:

    - Lie down.

    - Take a warm bath.

    - Meditate (I personally reccomend breathing-based techniques).

    - Have a hot drink (hot tea, coffee, chocolate, etc.).

The easiest method is to listen to music while lying on the bed. It really helps, especially in storywriting.

    Hope these help. :)

Nice thoughts JW, as usual. I don't like the names, although Kenon had a good idea there - any game where you custom-design a robot, Phantom Crash-style, would be cool.

Call me a sucker, but stompy-mech action is where its at, baby!
